Another dance craze has been making people across the globe “get down, down” as a slew of videos from netizens bombards our social media platforms with their various takes on the #KoKoBopChallenge, which is inspired by the latest hit track of the Korean all-male group EXO, “Ko Ko Bop.”
Certainly, Vice Ganda, who is a known follower of K-pop, purveys the rising popularity of the online challenge by bringing it to the noontime show It’s Showtime and doing it thrice already with co-hosts Anne Curtis, Vhong Navarro, and Nadine Lustre.
And this caught the attention of Korean viral news site Koreaboo, which in a post on Wednesday, August 9, recognized the stature of Vice as a Filipino star and a famous comedian and TV host. Koreaboo said Vice brought the new craze to local TV and would really make the EXO tune more popular in the Philippines.
Dancing to “Ko Ko Bop” as he exchanges banter with his co-hosts during the show’s Tawag Ng Tanghalan segment, Vice surely made audiences appreciate the dance craze and encouraged them to do their own versions of the challenge.
The challenge reportedly took off after an EXO fan named Resey dared her YouTube followers to do it and since went viral, with school children, teenagers, office workers, hanbok-clad ladies doing their own versions at their homes, malls, road crossings, and classrooms.
It won’t take long before Filipino celebrities and netizens would likewise take on the challenge.
As Chanyeol, a member of the sensational Korean idol group explained in an interview, there’s no precise definition for the term “Ko Ko Bop” and the composer actually only thought that “Ko Ko” is a fun word while “Bop” means dancing, so he combined it and came up with the catchy title for a summer-y and groovy song. It is included in EXO’s fourth studio album “The War” which was already released last month.
