Khalil Ramos remained in a state of disbelief even after days since finding out that he received his first Gawad Urian nomination.
Khalil’s portrayal in the Cinema One Originals coming-of-age film 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten earned him a Best Actor nomination for the 40th Gawad Urian.
“First reaction was just I’m super happy. It’s just so fulfilling for your craft to be acknowledged by Urian that is very credible and very respected,” he said in an exclusive interview with PUSH.
He then continued, “After nun, tinignan ko ang co-nominees ko and na-overwhelm ako. Just to be put on that list alongside the likes of Sir Bembol Roco, Tony Abuel, sobrang laki na nun sa akin.”
The young actor’s nomination is the sole nod that their film received for the upcoming Urian awards night.
Nominated in the same category are Coco Martin’s younger brother Ronwaldo Martin for Pamilya Ordinaryo, Tommy Abuel for Dagsin, Bembol Roco for Pauwi Na, Garry Cabalic for Paglipay, Paolo Ballesteros for Die Beautiful, and Pepe Smith for Singing in Graveyards.
Of the lot though, only he and Ronwaldo are of the younger generation and Khalil is very much thrilled about the idea of it.
“Parang nakakatuwa kasi, I mean, I guess we can serve as the representation and inspiration of this generation. Parang iba siguro ang impression na nase-set namin sa veteran actors, kasi parang may pinaglalaban din ang generation,” he explained.
Khalil is hoping that the nomination of the young ones like him sends the message to ensure the veterans that the industry is “in good hands.”
Khalil’s nomination, as well as the Audience Award win of 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten at the 32nd Torino LGBTQ International Film Festival in Italy last June 20, paved the way for comments of his “triumph” over his peers, like Daniel Padilla and Enrique Gil among others, on social media.
The former ASAP Boyfriendz members were formerly stars of the 2012 primetime show Princess and I along with Kathryn Bernardo.
To this Khalil said, “Sa akin naman kasi sa ganon, career decision siya na hindi naman sa ayoko makipag-compete sa path na maraming pumili.”
Just because he didn’t succeed in the love team path doesn’t mean that he didn’t try.
“Ayoko namang kumalas doon dahil I’ve been doing kahit small roles sa teleseryes. May mga love teams na triny tapos hindi naman nag-work unfortunately. Tapos nag MMK (Maalaala Mo Kaya) rin ako. Kumbaga hindi ko siya inisip na parang distansya ako sa path nila,” Khalil explained.
But Khalil was quick to clarify that what he did was discover what his unique characteristic was, in the same way that charisma was Daniel Padilla’s.
“Feeling ko ‘yun ang isang mali na mentality ng mga tao around the world in general. When you become self-entitled na ‘Bakit si Daniel sumisikat eh sabay lang naman kaming ni-launch sa teleserye? Bakit ako hindi ako sumisikat?’” he said.
For Khalil, he’s happy with the way that his career has been faring.
“So it doesn’t matter na kung hindi ako nakasabay sa kanila. Hindi ako biglang boom ang career, biglang sumikat. As long as ito ‘yung tatahakin kong path. Ito ‘yung gusto kong gawin. Eventually magkikitakita rin kami if gawin ko ng maayos, if gawin ko ng tama. If ibigay ko ‘yung lahat ko,” he ended.
Khalil is confident that, with his hard work and dedication, he would eventually find a spot in the industry.
The 40th Gawad Urian awards night will be aired on ABS-CBN this coming July 20.
