EXCLUSIVE: Is Jake Cuenca planning to put up a film production house?

On top of being a reliable actor, Jake Cuenca found a new passion in the entertainment scene as a film producer.

Jake’s first ever co-production film is no less than a 2017 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival finalist titled Requited. Aside from being the film’s producer, Jake also headlines Requited along with actress Anna Luna.

The film is categorized as a dramatic biking love story, about a disease-stricken biker who wants to conquer a treacherous terrain on one final adventure.

“I'm very happy that I produced this one in particular and for Cinemalaya as well,” said Jake in an exclusive interview with Push.

What made him choose the film?

“I saw such a beautiful script ehand nasakyan ko ang vision ng director ko. And I just wanted to help even more sa financial,” he explained. “I more or less gave my whole talent fee and plus more money on top of that to make this movie even better than what it was.”

Despite his venture into film production, Jake emphasized that he’s not looking at building his own film production outfit for the time being.

“A production company no, I don't think so. Pero I think from this moment on when they offer me an indie i'm not gonna look at the return or the income. If I really like the film, i'll just do it the same way I did right now,” he explained.

Jake added, “I’ll just get my TF and then i'll put some money in and then let's just talk. Kasi when you do naman indie i'm not going to do it for the money kasi if that was the case then I should've just done a mainstream movie.”

According to Jake, co-producing a film somehow makes him feel like he’s really part of what he has worked on.
“Definitely when they offer me indie movies from this point on i'll definitely consider getting percentages para investment on the movie,” he continued.

Furthermore, Jake believes that being a co-producer, in a way, gives him more freedom to collaborate with his director, screenwriter and other producers.

After taking on the role of a film producer, the Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin star is also looking at studying film directing.

“Definitely the next step for me is directing. After all the projects now that's what I want to do. Mag-aaral rin ako eh. If i'm looking for a long-term plan for myself, it's more on the lines of directing. But before I do that kailangan muna nakapagaral ako,” he ended.

Catch Jake in Requited at the 13th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival starting this August 4-13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and selected Ayala cinemas.
