National Youth Commission calls out Noli de Castro over Jake Zyrus joke

The National Youth Commission is far from pleased about the recent quip of TV Patrol broadcaster Noli de Casto about singer Jake Zyrus.

The said joke happened on air, during the latter part of TV Patrol’s July 10 episode just after a report on Jake’s transformation. In the said episode, the veteran broadcaster poked fun at Jake Zyrus, who was formerly known as Charice.

“Ang tawag diyan ay climate change. Madami talagang nababago ngayon," De Castro said about Zyrus.

The National Youth Commission was quick to react about the said comment, the department made their stand on the issue known via a statement of Commissioner Perci Cendaña, chairperson of the Committee on Social Inclusion and Equity.

"When a popular broadcaster and former Vice-President mocks a transgender man, he is not only offending LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people, he is also setting a bad example to his audience specially to the youth,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the subject of SOGIE or sexual orientation, gender identity and expression is not a subject for jokes.

The statement also underscored the need for respect and sensitivity among the members of the LGBTQ society and not.

In order to rectify the incident, NYC urges the former Vice President to apologize for what he said.

“By rectifying the offensive and discriminatory remarks, the former Vice-President will set a good example to his audience specially the youth. We urge him to be an ally for acceptance and equality,” the statement read.

Jake has yet to react on the said incident.
