Liza Soberano on doing her own stunts in ‘Darna’: ‘You have to look strong’

Now that she has started preparing for her newest role as the Pinoy superhero Darna, Liza Soberano admitted her first step was doing hard work at the gym. “Nakipag-meeting na ako kay Direk Erik Matti and they had me do a physical test in front of them. Siyempre para makita kung gaano ako kalakas. So based on what I did in front of them nakita nila kung ano yung kailangan ko. So right now I am working out with sir Bok Santos at the gym, nagpapalakas ako para sa mga stunts and I’m also doing cardio. I run every Sunday. I’m doing dance lessons din for grace and timing,” she shared.

Liza proudly revealed that she does not want to use a stunt double for the movie. “As much as possible no. I want to be able to do all my stunts para mas madali rin para sa director and cameramen kasi ang hirap rin pag dadayain. But if it becomes too life threatening of course I’m going to have someone do that for me because I don’t want to risk my life naman. Actually harnesses are very painful. Kasi na-try ko na mag-harness masakit talaga siya. But I find it to be very fun because I like rollercoasters so nag-e-enjoy naman ako dun. Probably yung magiging difficult para sa akin is the timing when it comes to stunts. You have to look strong but not be too strong because you don’t want to hurt the person you’re doing the scene with when you’re doing stunts. You have to make it believable,” she admitted,

The 19-year-old actress also addressed the issue of Darna’s usually skimpy costume which she might have to don for the film. “Well of course whatever is approved by the management yun ang susuotin ko. But if I were to choose, anything naman (is fine) actually as long as I’m prepared for it. Basta prepared ako hindi yung bibiglain ako (mag-two-piece). Yes I am maturing. I’m almost 20 na so I think it’s about time,” she said. Another thing Liza said she has to practice is shouting the iconic superhero’s name every time she undergoes a transformation from Narda to Darna. “Hindi ko siya pina-practice. Nahihiya ako sa sarili ko na i-practice siya (laughs). Kasi hindi ko pa alam yung tamang way talaga. But if they tell me na ako talaga yung sisigaw ng ‘Darna!’ I will do it. I haven’t watched any of the Darna films yet to be honest. I will be watching it with direk Erik Matti, all of them. So we can pinpoint what he wants from me, any specific moves in acting. Pero wala naman akong favorite Darna. I think all of them did well. They all have their own perspective on how to portray the role,” she explained.
