The issue about single mothers arose after Senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III joked about Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo’s civil status during her confirmation hearing before the Commission on Appointments (CA).

"On the lighter side, Sen. Drilon and I were looking at the personal information about you and you have two children, daughters ba or sons? Two daughters. But you're single," the Senator said

The Social Welfare Secretary explained to him that she was not brought up in a “normal” family as a child and was also a student activist at the University of the Philippines during the Martial Law years, thus, making her a human rights victim during the Marcos regime. Judy was also incarcerated from 1972 to 1986.

Senator Tito answered her and joked, "In the street language, when you have children and you are single, ang tawag doon ay 'na-ano lang.'"

More stars voiced out their opinion about the senator’s joke.
