OPM rock band Rivermaya recently signed a contract with Star Music as they gear up to release a new album.

Talking to PUSH during the contract signing, the band, who has already released 12 albums, said that listeners should watch out for the new stories that their upcoming songs will tell. “Mainly umiikot pa rin sa buhay ng mga Pilipino.” The band, which is composed of Mark Escueta, Nathan Azarcon, Mike Elgar, and Ryan Peralta, also said that the recurring theme would be about different kinds of romance.

The album, whose carrier single is “Manila,” will have eight all-original songs. According to Mark, they will feature songs about an office love affair, war heroine Irina Sendler, an overseas Filipino worker, and friends, among others. There is no specific date yet regarding the album’s release.

Considering that Rivermaya popularized songs that became iconic through time such as “Ulan,” “214,” “Awit ng Kabataan,” and “You’ll Be Safe Here,” do they plan to have their songs translated to theater plays? “Pwede rin. Maganda sana,” they said although adding that they have not received any offers yet. However, they said that they are “game” in case this happens. “Siguro mga three to four hours ‘yung play na ‘yun. Ang daming songs eh,” they added.

As Rivermaya has been around since 1993, they acknowledged the importance of enjoying their work on and offstage in order to stay in the business. “Kasi ‘yung tugtugan, given na ‘yan kasi musicians naman kami ever since bata kami pero ‘yung between ‘yung tugtog, ‘yung recording, ‘pag masaya rin ‘yun, ‘yun medyo crucial ‘yun.”

In the future, Rivermaya looks forward to doing music videos for their songs, promoting their album and collaborating for a possible television and/or movie project. They also said that they have plans to do a digital concert.
