Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin says that she suffered from facial paralysis when she was a teen.
Opening up about being a school geek, Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin, who is a lawyer from Ecuador, said she never expected to be a beauty queen, all the more when she suffered from facial paralysis in her teens.
She narrated, “Before, I was always the geek of the class, never thought about being a beauty queen. And, later after, when I was around 15 years old, I faced facial paralysis and I thought I might never be able to be a model.
“And I have to go to treatments (to) be able to get my face back again because you know how bad that is,” Katherine added.
Having lived in New York for six years where she studied elementary and high school, she then returned to her home country where she took up law. That was when people encouraged her to join beauty pageants. It was an idea which she liked since her father is into social work.
According to Katherine, becoming a beauty queen allowed her to help more people and earn their trust, which in turn helped with her advocacies.
Caring for the environment with a focus on eco-tourism is her current campaign.
