Ever since news broke out last year that his marriage was on the rocks, Gab Valenciano admitted he has been trying to channel the experience into something positive and used his own parents as his inspiration to be a better person. “Lahat ng pinagdaanan nila na masama at mabuti, they used it as fuel to be better people. yun din ang ginawa ko. Instead of looking back tapos magagalit ako or I’ll feel bad or I’ll let it pull me down, instead I made it lift me up to be better,” he shared during the I Can Do That presscon held last March 2 inside ABS-CBN.
The 28-year-old performer also shared that he and estranged wife Tricia Centenera are on speaking terms now. “We are not the best of friends yet but we are going towards a good friendship. Kasi kahit paano hindi kami dumaan dun sa stage na talagang patayan na talaga na ‘I hate you, I never want to see you again.’ Siyempre pag galit ka may mga nasasabi ka but at the end of the day may pinagsamahan kami, minahal ko din siya. So I think it’s unfair for both of us to throw away what could be a good friendship. And I’m open to that. I’m open to being friends kasi sayang eh. May pinagsamahan kayo na sobrang mabuti na why throw away a potential friendship? To be honest, the advice that I give to people is to make sure that when you get into something this major, actually anything in life, business, marriage, friendships, whatever it is, you need to be prepared for it. Honestly you’ll never be 100% prepared for anything,” he explained.
With rumors that infidelity and money matters were the cause of their split, Gab said he is focusing on moving on and is not looking to reconcile anymore. “Personally I feel like a friendship is all I have to offer to her. And I believe that’s more than enough. Kasi we were good friends before then we fell in love. Sadly things ended but at the end of the day, I’ve seen how we are as friends and we are very good as friends,” he added.
After getting married in the US in late 2014 (followed by a wedding in the Philippines in 2015), Gab said they have both agreed to eventually file for divorce. “Yes. We already have documents with us. But it’s just a matter of putting it all together kasi siyempre pag nagkasal in the U.S which is where we’re filing (it), pag nagkamali ka ng papeles ang hirap na eh. Ang hirap ulitin. So we’re trying to just perfect everything para at least pagka-file na namin everything’s set in stone already. Wala pang date,” he explained.
The I Can Do That contestant said they have already started steps on legal separation. When asked what the legalities are, Gab asks the local media to be patient. “I would much rather answer when it is clearer. But definitely we are trying to resolve that at the moment which is to legalize the separation. We’re still in talking terms right now. But that’s the beauty of it, nag-uusap kami. I can call her, she can call me. I can message her. Hindi kami nag-aaway. Tapos siyempre minsan nagkikita kami or whatever, yung mga friends ko nakikita siya at yung mga family ko. And she’s still very close to my family which I have no problem with. So in terms of all the legalities and the details and everything, I would much rather say something more definitive pagka nandun na,” he said.
