Playing the role of a father who has been estranged from his son, Piolo Pascual can relate his latest project to his own experiences.
Actor Piolo Pascual admitted he related his character in the upcoming movie, Northern Lights: A Journey To Love to his personal experiences.
Playing the role of a father who has been estranged from his son for a long time, Piolo, in real life, also got separated from his son, actor Inigo Pascual who lived with his mother in the United States.
During the bloggers’ conference for the said film, Piolo narrated the context of his character as he confronts the story’s main conflict. “’Yun ‘yung sinasabi ko na hindi mo alam kung saan ka lulugar. Hindi mo alam how to act in front of him kasi you have to be an adult. Kailangan mong maging mature para sa kanya kasi hindi mo naman pwedeng sabihin na siya ‘yung maglevel sa’yo. Ikaw ‘yung mag-a-adjust for him kasi he’s just a kid.”
When asked how he was able to validate these emotions, he said, “Eh napagdaanan ko kasi ‘yun, eh. That’s why it was easier for me to act because alam ko ‘yung gano’ng emotion. Alam ko ‘yung gano’ng awkward feeling na hindi mo alam kung paano ka magiging tatay sa harap ng anak mo.”
Recalling the first time he met Inigo, Piolo narrated, “I came from the States. ‘Nung dumating ako, nandito na ‘yung anak ko…Wala ako when he was born so it was hard for me as well because same thing, I had to be in the States because do’n ako nakatira,” adding that he had mixed emotions.
He also admitted, “Wala kasing lukso ng dugo, eh. So ‘yun ang inisip ko, eh. But down the line, there is this one day that I realized, sabi ko, kamukha ko talaga ‘yung anak ko. So ‘yun ‘yung talagang realization na kailangan mong tanggapin and it wasn’t hard for me but tinanggap ko siya ng buong buo because just like what I said… Hindi pupwedeng ipagkait sa bata ‘yung gano’ng karapatan na magkaroon ng magulang.
“Hindi ko po inisip kung ano mang mangyayari sa career ko. Hindi ko inisip kung anong mangyayari sa buhay ko. I just have to give him that right to have a father.”
Giving advice to other single dads, Piolo said that one has to learn to be selfless and be able to forgive one’s self. “And realize that hindi lang ikaw ang nangangailangan ng pagmamahal kung hindi pati ‘yung bata so for me, it was important for me to forgive whoever is involved in this situation for me to be able to give that love. Kasi it’s also a choice eh, even if it’s natural for you to be a father or to love that person because he happens to be your offspring.”
He also advised them to always be present in their children’s lives and consider their feelings.
