EXCLUSIVE: Carla Humphries reveals what almost made her want to quit showbiz

As part of the movie adaptation of the bestselling book Smaller and Smaller Circles, Carla Humphries said she considers it an honor to play journalist Joanna Bonifacio in the exciting crime thriller by Filipina author F.H Batacan. “Siyempre game ako sa pag-o-audition. I’m game to really try to earn a role and for them to handpick the cast and be part of that. Siyempre nakakataba ng puso kasi hindi lang ito basta basta pelikula. Siyempre mga respetadong aktor ang kasama and award-winning book ito so it’s a literary success,” she told PUSH during the TBA Films’ Smaller and Smaller Circles press launch this month.

Carla said that when she took a year-and-a-half hiatus from showbiz, she thought she would not be coming back. “It’s an honor to be part of the cast and siyempre nawala ako for a time. Pumunta ako ng France tapos akala ko hindi na para sa akin ang showbiz kasi parang ang tagal ko na rin pero hindi pa rin dumadating yung mga roles that I was hoping for and at first parang hindi ko na kaya. Number one, dismayadong dismayado ako sa career ko. I didn’t know kung ano yung dapat sa akin so parang ngayon everything is happening easily, yung parang it’s meant to happen now. So I’m just trying to make the most of all the opportunities that come. And if I’m here right now this is where God put me and this is where I’m meant to be,” she explained.

While in France, the Fil-French actress admitted she missed being around Pinoys. “Kasi ang mga French they live in their own world. Filipinos iba ang compassion. Like puwede ka maaksidente sa street sa France and hindi man lang lilingon. Dito kahit hindi mo kaano ano, pag wala kang makain papakainin ka. People will smile at you kahit konti lang ang meron sila ibibigay nila lahat. So talagang makatao ang Pinoy and iba nag pagmamahal at security pag may Pinoy around you,” she shared.

The Smaller and Smaller Circles actress also wanted to give her career another shot upon her return to the country. “The thing is, I’m half-Filipina so merong isang part ng pagkatao ko na parang mas ako pag nasa environment na ganun because I have my French side so when I’m with my friends lumalabas ang pagka-French ko. Pero pusong Pinoy talaga ako and one thing I realize is iba talaga ang daliw ng showbiz here in the Philippines because it’s really an outlet for our people to dream. I hope to one day do movies that will reach outside of the Philippines but I super value the fact na hindi rin madaling pumasok sa showbiz and talagang naghirap ako sa pagbalik. Hindi ganun kadali,” she added.

Graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board, Smaller and Smaller Circles will open in cinemas nationwide starting December 6, Wednesday. It is produced by TBA Studies, the indie outfit behind Heneral Luna, Sunday Beauty Queen, Bliss, and Birdshot.
