Jon Santos shares his thoughts on beauty queen Rachel Peters.
All set for the his comedy show Laugh Wins on December 2, iconic comedian Jon Santos said he is excited to share the stage again with his special guest Mitch Valdez. “I am giddy with the reunion with Mitch. Her point of view has always been from different stages in her life eh so stories from the ‘70s and ‘80s. She is one of the kindred spirits who started doing this a little ahead of us,” he shared during the Laugh Wins presscon held last November 27 at Resorts World Manila.
During the event, Jon made an entrance dressed as one of his personas “Queen P” modeled after 2015 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach who is also one of his favorites. “I am always very, very grateful na chumamba ako into a character that is so multi-faceted, tumatagal sa repertoire. Like the Vilma character sa politics, showbiz, society column, movie column, literally for all seasons. There is something for her to say on love, on motherhood, on stardom, on politics. So with Pia parang papunta na din dun. Parang so many doors are opening for her. She has a persona na endorser, a persona na beautiful fashion plate kind of persona, she’s an icon for the country. So even current events piece said through her puwede. Bakit? Mahalaga sa kanila ang world peace. There is always a need for an ambassadress,” he explained.
The veteran comedian said the definition of beauty queen now has broadened to other spectrums. “So, for lack of a better word, usable ang Pia character sa kahit anong topic all of a sudden. Nadidikit na siya ng tao sa media events that are not just beauty pageants. For a while they connected her with the Darna project so pati movies. With Pia, napaka-malleable nung monologue niya, it can include now international events. It can include hosting or new, or nationhood because of the slant of the beauty queen as an ambassadress of peace. So a beauty queen is not just a character in the showbiz world,” he added.
As for his thoughts on the country’s most recent representative to the pageant Rachel Peters, Jon has very positive thoughts about her. “Of course I was very proud of her. Actually parang yung buong mundo niya, lahat sila na-te-tense, ang pamilya niya, ang boyfriend, ang mga Filipino sa States. She was calm, she was confident. She did her best. She was gorgeous and I think there will be many, many more things waiting for her post-Miss Universe. What a great year for the Filipina beauty queen. I think she has a long journey ahead of her. I think she will be in the news, she will be in fashion pages, she’ll be hosting and I will be excited to play her and of course the challenge is continually going to be her is to not to eat too much on my part (laughs),” he admitted.
When not making audiences laugh onstage in glitzy and sexy gowns, Jon said he works hard to make his body always fit enough for his many roles. “Christmas season na naman so extra challenge to be sexy. When I eat lechon, I don’t eat the apple and when I eat fruitcake I only eat the fruit and not the cake (laughs). At least sa dragonfruit hindi naman ako mahilig sa dragon. At saka halo halo without ice. But seriously I have a trainer. Just like in my comedy, in the professional necessity in staying malleable and empty canvas ka to transform into different personas. Personal trainers make sure there are no injuries. I have a very good trainer,” he said.
