Since her much-talked about win in 2015, Pia Wurtzbach definitely earned celebrity status not only locally but internationally.
But before she joined beauty pageants, Pia was an actress, appearing on ABS-CBN shows in the early 2000s. These included the teen-oriented show K2BU, comedy series Bora, and teleseryes It Might Be You and Sa Piling Mo.
Who are the other Miss U beauties who also became active in show business?
1. Pilar Pilapil
After joining Miss Universe 1967, Pilar Pilapil became a highly-acclaimed actress, taking on both protagonist and antagonist roles.
Pilar’s memorable movies included Napakasakit, Kuya Eddie where she won a Gawad Urian best actress award, and Imelda, Ang Uliran that got her a best actress award at the 1970 Manila Film Festival.
After playing a supporting character on the defunct late afternoon drama Pasion de Amor, Pilar is now part of the new primetime soap A Love To Last.
2. Margie Moran
The second Filipina to win the Miss Universe (1973) crown, Margie Moran got to host her own show Margie on Mindanao and produced the movie, Bagong Buwan starring Cesar Montano.
Currently focused on socio-economic activities and the arts, Margie manages Ballet Philippines.
3. Chat Silayan
After winning third runner-up in the 1980 Miss Universe, Chat Silayan entered show business as an actress. She starred in movies like Dyesebel, Ipaglaban Mo The Movie part 2, Esperanza The Movie and My First Romance, among others.
Chat passed away on April 23, 2006 due to colon cancer.
4. Joanne Quintas
The country’s representative to the 1995 Miss Universe, Joanne Quintas appeared in GMA Network shows such as the ‘90s drama series, Anna Karenina.
She also appeared in various movies such as Abakada… Ina, Shake Rattle and Roll VI, Balawis, Close To You and Ang Babae sa Septik Tank.
5. Dayanara Torres
Although not Filipino, this 1993 Miss Universe title holder from Puerto Rico has a special place in the hearts of Pinoys.
Dayanara did several movies in the country including Hataw Na! with Gary Valenciano, Basta’t Kasama Kita with Aga Muhlach and Type Kita, Walang Kokontra with Cesar Montano.
6. Michelle Van Eimeren
This Australian beauty represented her country in the 1994 Miss Universe when it was held in Manila.
Although she did not win, she earned a career on Philippine TV and married singer Ogie Alcasid. Their movies included Manolo en Michelle Hapi Together, Isko: Adventures of Animasia and Pwera Biro, Mahal Kita.
