FDCP Chairperson Liza Diño proposes a ‘solution’ for Maxine Medina’s Q&A problem

011417-LizaDino_PUSH.jpgInstead of joining the thousands who are disappointed over Philippine bet to Miss Universe 2016 Maxine Medina’s recent interview “mishap,” Film Development Council of the Philippines chairperson Liza Diño suggests a viable solution

Liza posted her suggestion to her Facebook page where she broached the idea of hiring a translator for Maxine.

She even pointed out that the people should “focus on her strength.”

“Hindi niya kailangang piliting magpakabihasa sa Ingles para lang magkaroon ng edge para manalo,” she added.

Maxine’s language trainer Mark Payumo took to Facebook to air his sentiments after netizens bashed her upon seeing the viral video where she was seen giving a  “thoughtless” and “grammatically incorrect” statement during her send-off.

"Maxine has improved a lot. She is hardworking and she's doing her best to become a better version of herself," he wrote

Mark’s post has latched on the difficulty of mastering a second language, which could’ve been the reason why Maxine “messed up” her statement.

"I feel bad because of the online bashing that is happening at the moment. It is not something new to me but just to give you a different perspective on the matter, my research (Abalos, 2012) on attitudes of Filipino English language learners show that the interpersonal, sociolinguistic, and sociocultural contexts have to do with how inpiduals communicate. Situations may be viewed negatively by people who are not completely aware of the process of acquiring and learning a second language in formal and informal learning environments. Larsen-Freeman, Tananuraksakul, and Roh have written on particular aspects of this area of study," he wrote

He also reiterated, “errors are normal” as  “Even first language speakers of English commit mistakes, too.”

Mark ended his statement with a challenge, which read as “At the end of the day, it's just a beauty contest. Maxine will still be beautiful. She'll still be designing interiors. She has a beautiful life ahead. How about you?"

Maxine is set to vie against the other Miss Universe candidates from all around the globe on January 30 at the Mall of Asia Arena for the coronation night.
