Director Olivia Lamasan said that she requested for former Pinoy Big Brother housemate and young actor Joshua Garcia to be in the Kathryn Bernardo-Daniel Padilla film, Barcelona: A Love Untold.
“I personally requested to work with Joshua in this film. When I saw him in PBB, sabi ko, ‘itong batang ‘to, parang meron ‘to,’” Direk Olivia, who is popularly called Inang, said during the movie’s press conference.
She then requested for Joshua, who was supposed to do a different project, to be in her movie instead to see if her gut feel was right.
“Ang masasabi ko ay, oo (Meron nga siya) pero nagdusa siya talaga,” the award-winning director quipped
“They need to focus. They need to know that this is not just play,” she said.
Saying that she likes Joshua as he is very grounded, Direk Olivia later added, “Pero natutuwa ako sa batang ‘to, napaka-grounded. Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Alam mo, anak, mag-focus ka lang because you have it.”
Direk Olivia also shared that when Joshua auditioned for a role in the 2015 Pangako Sa ‘Yo, she already saw his potential. However, the character did not suit him so he did not get the role. Hence, she asked for him to be in this movie and saw that, “He bloomed, nag-blossom siya.”
As for her advice for new actors, the respected director advised, “Sasabihin ko, ‘do your job.’ Research muna tapos kung kakayanin mo kung paano ako, then go.”
Direk Olivia is known for her award-winning movies such as Starting Over Again, Sana Maulit Muli and In My Life, among others.
