Sharon Cuneta speaks up on Bilibid performance

092916-SharonCuneta_PUSH.jpgFollowing the controversies concerning the Philippines’ war against drugs, Megastar Sharon Cuneta’s name was dragged into the issue after a witness during a House probe mentioned her as one of the celebrities who performed for the inmates of New Bilibid Prison.

Her husband, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, immediately came to her rescue and released a statement on his website saying that Sharon indeed performed some songs in the national penitentiary in 2012. However, it was only to support an outreach activity her show then a show had there to feature the lives of inmates.

“On July 10, 2012, Sharon went to the New Bilibid Prison for the taping of her talk show, Kasama mo Kapatid, which had an episode featuring the life of inmates. She sang four songs for the closing portion, which is the customary format of the show. She sang ‘Maging Sino Ka Man,’ ‘Tubig at Langis,’ ‘Kahit Konting Pagtingin,’ and ‘Kahit Maputi Na ang Buhok Ko’ but only to support RockEd’s outreach program for prisoners,” he wrote.

During the press conference for Sharon Cuneta’s upcoming concert at The Theater at Solaire on Wednesday, September 28, the Megastar finally gave her thoughts on the issue.

Laughing it off, she echoed the explanation of her husband, saying that her then show really entailed having her go out of the studio.

Sharing that she also interviewed inmates, Sharon said, “I wanted the show to reinforce positive values and to give hope to those na medyo wala na,” recalling that she heard stories of inmates finding God, studying again or learning a productive hobby. She also implied never meeting high-profile inmates.

“It was so ridiculous… Siguro nagbanggit lang ‘yung tao na ininterview na ‘yung mga nagpupunta dito. Sabi ko, nagmagandang loob na lang ako, kumanta pa nga ako ‘dun, at ang banda ko, banda nila ah. Nakikanta ako habang nagbigay kami ng something, ng mga gifts, ganyan, dala namin. Tapos ‘yung ending, ikaw pa ‘yung (masama). It was just so funny that’s why it died right away. Hindi ko naman kailangan makipag-chummy-chummy sa mga drug lords or sa mga murderers, gano’n,” she said, laughing.
