UK Film Critic calls Charo Santos an Oscars ‘frontrunner’

Lodge even took his prediction to his Twitter account on Sunday.

Lodge was all praises for maximalist director Lav Diaz’s latest opus titled Ang Babaeng Humayo. The film successfully bagged the Best Film award at the 73rd Venice Film Festival in Italy on Saturday.

The South African-born critic singled out Santos’ “seething” performance of the film on his Variety review.

“It’s Santos-Cancio’s soft-skinned but seething performance that must see viewers through the film’s most challenging passages. She plays Horacia’s quiet resilience without making her a kind of impenetrable exemplar,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, just hours after the film’s big win, Malacañang immediately extended its congratulations to Diaz.

"This triumph of Lav Diaz, an independent filmmaker described by the Irish Times as 'a master of the Philippines,' is the latest addition to the Philippines' biggest ever haul of awards in this year's A-list film festivals. Berlinale, Cannes, and now Venice, the luster of the world-class Filipino talent has continuously shone!" Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said in a text message.

Senator Loren Legarda also acknowledged Diaz and Santos’s recent success. She even revealed in a statement that she will be a filing a Senate resolution to comment the two.

"Congratulations to Lav Diaz for winning the highest honor in the world's oldest and one of the most prestigious film festivals! I also commend everyone behind the film, including lead actress, Charo Santos-Concio, who has, once again, showcased mastery of her craft," Legarda said.
