Carla Guevara-Laforteza taps her mother instincts for ‘Rak of Aegis’ role
070316-CarlaGuevarra_push.jpgCarla Guevara-Laforteza is very much overwhelmed about being the newest addition in the cast for the fifth run of PETA’s Rak of Aegis.

Carla plays the role of Mary Jane or MJ, which was formerly performed by Isay Alvarez. MJ is the resourceful and perpetually concerned barangay captain of Barangay Venezia where the entire musical is set.

Gusto ko rin sumali ng Rak. Walang katapusan, na buong run ng 3 Stars, kumakanta ako ng Rak of Aegis songs, pati sa audition namin ni Myke sa ibang musical, yun mga attack ko sa song, pa-Rak para makita yung boses ko,’” shared Carla in an interview during this season’s press preview.

To amp up Carla’s role, Rak of Aegis’ creators added a new song for her character.

According to Carla, who once played Kim in Miss Saigon, she was able to relate to her character as she is also a mother.

“As a mom, and as a wife, ako yung nagbubudget sa bahay so ganoon mga dilemmas naiintindihan ko, I find stuff that I have experienced and try to put that into the character,” she related.

But if there was one thing that she found quite challenging about joining the production, it’s the fact that she is working with one of her best friends, Loy Martinez.

Loy, who is a returning Rak cast member, plays the role of Kiel, MJ’s ex-lover-turned-cranky-employee.

“Ever since we were teens, I can never share a scene with him because tatawa lang ako ng tatawa!'” she recalled.

In fact, this “dilemma” has been going on even offstage especially when they were doing corporate shows.

“… Tapos kami magka-duet, hindi namin natatapos yung song kasi natatawa kami kaya challenge sa akin eto na he's going to play one of my leading men!'” blurted Carla.

Nevertheless, Carla says she is looking forward to how the public would accept the chemistry that they can offer onstage.

The show runs from June 17 to August 28, Tuesdays to Fridays 8 pm, Saturdays to Sundays 3 pm and 8 pm at the PETA Theater Center.
