Richard and Ian, who have both been Jodi Sta. Maria's leading men, are currently being pitted against each other due to their upcoming movie The Achy Breaky Hearts.

During a recent pocket press conference, Richard joked that Ian was the reason why the Maya-Sir Chief tandem from Be Careful with My Heart "broke up."

"No, we really had to do different projects for us to grow as a person," said the former Be Careful with My Heart star.

Jodi and Ian worked on the TV remake of the iconic soap Pangako Sa 'Yo as Amor Powers and Eduardo Buenavista, respectively. The show paved the way for their love team to have its own strong following.

"I didn't think of him as a rival. I think it was a career move. At tsaka binigay ng management 'yun eh," he explained.

"Tsaka binigyan rin naman ako ng projects kaya lang 'yung project na gagawin ko hindi natuloy at that time," Richard continued.

Richard was supposed to co-star with Judy Ann Santos in a soap titled Someone to Watch Over Me but the show was shelved because the latter had to take a break due to her pregnancy.

Meanwhile, Richard likewise shrugged off the comparison between him and Ian.

"Well I think we have different levels of expertise in different matters. Siguro, I think Ian is very experienced in terms of drama," he explained. 

He nevertheless assured fans that he would do his best in their film.

"It's up to the audience to see how effective we are in the roles that we played," he ended.

Catch Richard, Ian and Jodi on The Achy Breaky Hearts in cinemas nationwide starting June 29.
