In a press conference where he personally accepted his award from the World Cinema Festival for this film Mulat (Awaken), Jake advised the new breed of stars to prioritize honing their skills.
“Like my point a while ago for the kids, lalo na ngayon, you see so many new ones who are stuck to their phones and Instagram and ‘yun ang importante sa kanila eh, social relevance,” he said.
The Because You Love Me actor hopes that they would realize that “hard work pays off” and “not by posting on Instagram or Twitter.”
“When I say hard work, you go to the set early, you read your script and you perform like there’s no tomorrow. That’s for me,” he said stressing that he’s not referring to any particular star.
“Sana malaman nila na instead of being on your phone, wala akong pinapatamaan ah, I’m just saying because this is what I noticed with the young ones.
“That's the way to the top. That’s the way you stay in this industry, by your performances not by Instagram post or anything,” he continued.
As for Jake, despite his international citations, he admitted that he is still craving for a local recognition.
“It will feel good kung bibigyan ako ng award ng local award giving body, I’m not going to deny it,” he unabashedly claimed.
Jake won a Best Supporting Actor award at the 28th PMPC Star Awards for the film In The Name of Love in 2014. He, however, shared the award with Baron Geisler for the movie Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story.
“If they give me another one, honestly I would probably cry,” he said adding that, “Kasi ilang beses nakong na-nominate and I felt like I deserve it but I didn’t get it.”
In the meantime, Jake is very happy that he has a number of projects to work on this year. There is his soap with Gerald Anderson and Yen Santos titled Because You Love Me.
On top of that, Jake would be doing two movies this year. One of them would be with his Pasion de Amor co-stars with Ejay Falcon and Joseph Marco and the other one is with Angeline Quinto.
