The Cannes Film Festival head turner talks about all the bashing she received after the event.
After attending the Cannes Film Festival this year as part of the cast of the Brillante Mendoza film Ma’ Rosa
, Maria Isabel Lopez said she did not expect that photos of her in a stunning emerald gown would go viral.
"Na-overwhelm ako. Hindi ko talaga akalain na ganun ang response kasi dapat nga ang focus nila was the film na brillante Mendoza made it there again. Pero nga victory sa akin yun na na-relieve ako kasi nanalo si Jaclyn Jose ng Best Actress,” she shared during the Ma’ Rosa homecoming dinner held last May 25.
The former Binibining Pilipinas-Universe added she does not believe she stole the attention away from her fellow Pinoy artists at the red carpet.
"Hindi. No, hindi ko inisip yun. Kasi walang effort yun. Akala nila trying hard. Di ba yung iba nagsabi, ‘Why did she steal it?’ Why did she try so hard?’ Hindi nila alam walang effort yun.
“Yung makeup ko ako lang nag-makeup, yung buhok ko walang blower yun pa rin. In fact in 2009 (when she first attended Cannes for the film Kinatay also directed by Mendoza) I did exactly the same pose, the same pamewang, the same wave, the same projection, look to the left then look to the right and smile,” she shared.
Maria Isabel says it was also not true that she deliberately distanced herself during the group shot so she the focus would be on her.
"Kasi ilang beses akong naapakan sa baba pa lang hindi pa kami rumarampa. Si John Paul Duray kasi siya yung katabi ko pero he was so gracious to hold my hand. In fact hindi ako naka-platform. Pag nag-platform pa ako ng ganun mas tetano yun ‘di ba? Naka-stiletto lang ako, the classic stiletto. Ayoko lang madapa kaya ako dumistansya. At saka my god did you see the gown? Punong puno ng footprints!” she revealed.
The much talked about Albert Andrada gown that she wore was not the original gown she imagined she would be wearing in Cannes.
"Well nung pinick-up ko yung gown honestly medyo nag-worry ako. Kasi sabi ko kay Albert Andrada, ’Simplehan mo lang ha. Remember your doing the dress of a junior citizen. Second, huwag mahaba yung train at hindi ko yan ma-ke-keri sa red carpet. Ayoko na mahirapan ako.’
“Ayoko mahirapan. I wanted to be comfortable. Pero nung kinuha ko yung gown nahiya ako kasi nag-worry ako kasi ang lalim nung plunging, three times sa lalim nung kay Pia Wurtzbach. So my god, junior citizen itong binibihisan niya. Pangalawa yung train times three nung train!” she said.
Despite the bashing, Maria Isabel remarked she appreciates those who praised her look and saw nothing wrong with the impact she made abroad.
"Kung may positive siyempre may negative. Hindi ako na-hurt. Alam mo naman ako, maraming masakit na nangyari sa buhay ko na pagdating sa ganyan hindi na ako masasaktan. Well no regrets lang. Yun lang some comments lang na, ‘Alam mo she should understand that this is not her film. She’s only doing a cameo role.’ I agree. Merong nag-post na, ‘I didn’t like the idea that it’s not even her film. She’s not even in the title role and she was like so dressed inappropriately,’
“But then people are entitled to that. Alam ko naman my place in the sun na cameo role lang ako. Agree naman ako na dun na sa presscon hindi na kami sinama kasi hindi naman kami major cast,” she explained.
