Jake Cuenca remained in high spirits over the recent unexpected win of his 2014 indie Mulat at the World Cinema Brazil 2016 held last May 22 in Copacabana, Brazil.
“Kasi matagal ko ng ginawa ang movie na ito eh. So parang sinali ng director ulit kasi the last time I heard about the movie was when I won an award in New York,” he shared in an exclusive phone interview with Push.com.ph.
Jake bagged the Best Actor award for his portrayal in Mulat in the 2014 International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM).
This time side from his Best Actor nod, the film also took home the Best Narrative award.
Jake described his acceptance of the film, as well as other indie films, as “passion projects.”
“It feels good kasi when you accept a passion picture and it comes back to you this way, you win an award from different countries,” he highlighted.
Jake continued, “May mga napanalo nakong award dito sa Pilipinas pero of course ‘yung Best Actor ko na panalo twice for this film was for an international film, so it feels good.”
Jake shared that his role in the film was a welcome deviation from his intense roles on TV, like his character, the intense Juan Samonte, on the recently concluded top-rating soap Pasion de Amor.
The Dianne Ventura psychological-thriller centers on the story of “mentally-afflicted” Sam played by Loren Burgos who is enamored with her new man named Jake, played by Jake, but who happens to be engaged to Vincent, played by Ryan Eigenmann.
Jake proudly shared that that what really got him to do the film two years ago was the distinct story and vision that Dianne presented in the storyline. According to him, Mulat was actually Dianne’s first full-length film.
So what’s the next step for them?
After conquering Brazil, Jake shared that Dianne plans to bring their movie to other film festivals in Europe.
At present, Jake is busy filming his upcoming soap Because You Love Me in Mindoro with Gerald Anderson and Yen Santos under Direk Dan Villegas.
