Soon to start its fifth run in the PETA theater, the award winning Pinoy musical Rak of Aegis recently introduced new members of the cast, this time including top comedian Jon Santos who will be one of the three actors alternating in the role of Fernan.
"Nag-audition ako at nabigyan buhay ko yung mga kanta ni Fernan. Natutuwa ako na ang ating director at musical director ay nagbigay ng green light. Hanggang ngayon super great and excited ako for this opportunity to be on the PETA stage,” he shared during the Rak of Aegis press conference held last May 18 at the PETA theater in Quezon city.
The veteran comedian admitted he is a big fan of the musical which features songs from the band Aegis and was first staged in 2014. Jon admits it is a new experience for him to perform in PETA.
“Literally first time ko today na makatungtung dito. Kasi dun ako sa audience noon. I watched three of the set of casts nung 206 na performances. Totoo po yan,” he added.
Even though he has been one of the country’s top stand-up comedians, Jon said he has always missed doing theater work after graduating from the University of the Philippines with an Economics degree in 1987.
"I’m very grateful for stand-up comedy. I’m very grateful for night club work, lounge work and television but I really miss theater after I graduated from university and iniwan ko yung pag-te-teatro,” he revealed.
The Rak of Aegis actor says he is slowly making more and more time to do work on stage.
"Ang hirap hirap magnakaw ng oras to commit to a play kasi bawal ang pa-importante, you cannot really impose. And over the years napapansin ko eh bakit yung mga mas busy sa akin, may mga Jett Pangan, Eula Valdez, Aiza Seguerra nag-commit to a play so lumalakas lakas ang loob ko. So over the years patakas takas, nag-audition ako sa Priscilla (Queen of the Desert), tapos Dog-eaters had socio-political themes. Priscilla had great songs and great recall pero hindi Tagalog. Bituing Walang Ningning didn’t have that socio-cultural, political undertones so parang hindi pa nag-full circle ang mga tema at mga awitin,” he explained.
With the musical starting its run on June 17 until August 28 this year, Jon gears up to give the audience his best on his 30th year in the industry as well.
"I’m looking forward to everything and to all the new friends I’ll make and I’m very thankful that they’re so patient and kind to let me catch up sa script. Buti na lang sinuportahan ito at umabot ng 206 (shows) at umabot sa five runs at nakasingit ako na maging bahagi nito. Ito na ang nagsimula sa aking 30th year,” he said.
