After
promoting his election-themed rom-com film My
Candidate, Derek Ramsay admitted playing the role of congressman Sonny
Suarez was an eye-opener for him when it comes to public service. "I
realize it’s
very give and take. The government needs to help us and we need to help the
government. Ang problema is every
time we elect a government, we just complain. So the change and the sacrifice
has to come from all of us. That’s why we need a
leader that really inspires our countrymen na
lahat tayo kailangan magbago,” he said. If he was ever offered a chance to
run for government in the future, Derek said he already has an answer.
"No. It’s
a definite no."
Derek said working with Iza Calzado (who plays his campaign rival and ex-girlfriend in the film) for the first time was a bonus. "She is the most intense actress I’ve worked with. Grabe siya ka-intense when she prepares for her role and for the scene. Sobrang passionate. Siguro if I was to compare her to somebody na ganun ka-intense it would be the Diamond Star (Maricel Soriano). So I make sure I I’m prepared kasi ayoko mapahiya. I’ve known her for a while and she’s never changed. Working with her is an amazing experience,” he admitted.
In the movie, he is paired with Shaina Magdayao who plays his communications coach. "It’s great working with Shaina. I’ve been wanting to work with her for a while. Very close ako sa sisters niya especially si Vina. Like I said, lagi kaming nagkakaroon ng offer magkatrabaho pero hindi lang natutuloy pero now natuloy na. And she’s a brilliant actress. I don’t know why she hasn’t been given a break until now. She’s a very versatile actress. She was put in a position that she’s not used to but she was very convincing in how she portrayed her character,” he shared.
Even before My Candidate, Derek said he and Shaina were already being paired up. "Actually me and Shaina we were supposed to do movies even before. May offer na sa amin to do movies. Sayang hindi lang nagkatuluyan but now we have the chance to work together,” he added.
My Candidate is now showing in theaters nationwide. Also starring Shaina Magdayao, Iza Calzado, Ketchup Eusebio, and Nico Antonio. Directed by Quark Henares under Quantum Films.
