After several tries to in the political scene, actor Richard Gomez is finally declared by the board of canvassers as Ormoc City Mayor after defeating Liberal Party’s Ondo Codilla.
According to the data transmitted by the Commission on Elections, Richard, who ran under the Nationalist People’s Coalition party, won with 53,234 votes while Ondo got 44,453 votes.
Richard first entered politics when he was appointed by Mamamayan Ayaw sa Droga (MAD) party-list as nominee but the group was disqualified by the Supreme Court in 2001.
In 2007, he decided to run for senator but lost. In 2010, he ran for a seat in the House of Representatives but did not win. In his last bid for public office in 2013, the actor ran for mayor in Ormoc City but lost to Edward Codilla.
On the other hand, Richard’s wife Lucy Torres won again as Congresswoman of the 4th District of Leyte.
In a previous interview with Boy Abunda, Richard said that running for public office was a big risk for him as he is enjoying a revival of his acting career.
"It was a big decision for me. Kasi ang ganda ng takbo ng career ko. This year, last year, and next year will be a better career for me as an actor, “ he said.
