Brillante Mendoza to attend Cannes Film Festival with Andi Eigenmann
042316-brillante_main.jpgAfter making the cut for the main competition of the 69th Cannes Film Festival next month for his new film Ma’ Rosa, director Brillante Mendoza said he is excited to return to Europe’s most prestigious film festival for the fourth time. His film was shortlisted for the main competition from out of more than 1,000 film entries. "Tungkol siya sa isang pelikula na na-involve sa drugs, sa pagbebenta ng mga drugs at na-involve din ang pulis sa system at kung papano magpapatakbo yung mga pulis dito sa atin sa sitwasyon na yun,” he shared.

Busy with the opening of the second edition of the Sinag Maynila 2016 this month, the filmfest founder is hopeful for this year’s new batch of competing full length and short films. "Ang Sinag Maynila ay tungkol sa pagbibigay ng grants sa mga filmmakers para magawa nila yung mga pelikula nila. Masaya kami kasi yung unang batch ng mga filmmakers is very successful kasi nakapunta sila at nanalo sa iba’t ibang festival ng mga awards. So sa amin it’s an achievement. So we’re looking forward to the second edition. Sana mas ma-patronize pa ng ating mga manunuod,” he said.

Direk Brillante admitted that Sinag Maynila would not have been possible without his co-founder Wilson Tieng who is the president of Solar Entertainment. "To be very honest about it I’m so very thankful with Mr. Wilson Tieng because these are private money. This is not government money. Remember sa ibang bansa ang isang film festival ay tumatakbo dahil meron siyang majoy support ng gobyerno. Nanggagaling ang pera sa gobyerno dahil hindi biro magpatakbo ng isang festival. Napakamahal,” he added.

After the Sinag Maynila filmfest which runs from April 21 to 26, Direk Brillante will be getting ready to leave for Europe in May to attend Cannes with some of his Ma’ Rosa cast. "Well ang mga nag-confirm na sasama sila Jaclyn Jose of course and si Andi Eigenmann pa lang naman sa mga actors. Marami kasi silang artista involved dun. Nandun din si Mark Anthony Fernandez, si Baron Geisler, si Maria Isabel Lopez, Mercedes Cabral, Felix Roco at may mga baguhan din na first film nila so very exciting,” he shared.

The Ma’ Rosa director admitted that to be nominated is already an achievement for the Philippines. "Mahirap kasi magsabi kasi even the last time that I was there sobrang ang mga kasama ko ngayon ay mga pinapanuod ko lamang ang mga pelikula nila (laughs). Mga pinapalabas ko lang sa mga estudyante ko ang mga pelikula nila. Ngayon side by side kasama na natin sila sa main competition so sa akin malaking malaking honor na makatabi mo yan. Yung isa naging president na nga ng Cannes in 2008. So napakalaking karangalan na sa akin yun. For me, it’s more than enough,” he explained.

Working with Andi Eigenmann for the first time, Direk Brillante said there was no problem with her and mother Jaclyn Jose during filming. "Yung working attitude hindi lang nila pero the whole team napaka-natural eh. We don’t practice kasi yung kung artista ka dapat ganito o staff ka so dapat ganyan. So sa akin kasi, I’ve always practiced yung collaborative effort, yung teamwork. Importante yun sa akin. That’s why siguro nag-e-enjoy sila. Si Andi ang sabi nila they’ve never seen her like that in other projects and productions. Kasama namin yan, nakaupo yan sa floor, walang attitude problem. Si Jaclyn is a longtime friend so wala na kaming problema niyan,” he said.

Direk Brillante revealed that Andi and Jaclyn did not clash at all. “Wala parang nag-uusap silang parang normal. Hindi kasi sila parang mother and daughter. It’s never been like that. parang nandudun sila dahil trabaho. Of course kapag wala na kami sa set nagke-kuwentuhan, nagtatatawanan, nagbibiruan. Masaya siya. Wala, no tension at all with Jaclyn and Andi,” he adds.

The Sinag Maynila film festival runs from April 21 to 26 at SM Aura, SM Megamall, SM Manila and SM North Edsa. For the complete screening schedule, log on to www.sinagmaynilafilmfestival.com.
