Dionne Monsanto admitted that she was actually surprised when the kontrabida role of Lucy in Tubig at Langis was offered to her. “To be very honest I was surprised that they gave me this role kasi I was used to getting mabait roles, iyak-iyak, ganyan, but they gave me this. Akala ko naman at first iirap-irap lang ako but then when they put so much weight on my role parang I was so happy and nervous and worried at the same time kasi malaking responsibility siya eh pero sobrang grateful ako,” she said in an interview with Push.com.ph.
For her preparations for the role, Dionne relayed that she has been watching films and has been studying the villain’s performances. “People always think na it’s easier to do kontrabida roles because it’s very rare na you cry, this and that. Me kasi I’m not used to doing kontrabida roles. Secondly in real life I’m very corky and talkative, maingay ako sa set so I watched for example Devil Wears Prada. Inulit-ulit kos siya. I studied Meryl Streep’s nuances, ‘yung gestures niya, ‘yung tingin tingin niya, ‘yung poise niya and it’s for this role to work kasi you have to stay in character the whole time. And another thing is you have to be technical about it kasi hindi pwede ‘yung kontrabida na soft. Dapat precise ‘yung mannerisms and gestures,” she stated.
Dionne shared that playing the role of Lucy has earned her some bashers online. How does she handle this? “Ako kasi ano ako softy ako eh. Madali akong ma-affected sa mga sinasabi ng mga tao. Okay lang na you attack my role but then people started to private message me din, direct message me [sabi nila] ‘Makita lang ktia naku sasabunutan kita’ ganyan ganyan tapos ako naman parang ‘Ay personal na ‘to’ so I had my Instagram private muna habang galit na galit pa ‘yung mga tao but I will open up again maybe in a few weeks, we’ll see. As much as possible I try not to make patol kasi dehado naman ako. You just don’t mind them.”
Among the many stars in the industry, Dionne shared that she looks up to Cherie Gil and Jodi Sta. Maria when playing kontrabida roles. “I’ve always found Cherie Gil, very convincing. Jodi is like this generation’s parang ano siya eh bida-kontrabida so those two actresses [I look up to].”
She shared that she met Cherie last year and that she wants to work with the actress. “I met Cherie Gil last year late last year and sobrang na-star struck ako parang ito ‘yung isa sa mga gusto kong makatrabaho but then she’s doing Single/Single kasi with Cinema One and I know one of the producers and of course some of the actors there I’ve worked there also. I went to the set and I met her and it was just an amazing feeling.”
Meanwhile, she did get the chance to work with Jodi before in Be Careful With My Heart.
Is she open to playing more kontrabida roles in the future? “You know what I’m actually enjoying being Lucy. It’s really scary kasi ang sama-sama ni Lucy but then now that I’ve embraced her parang mas napaglalaruan ko siya so most definitely I would love to do a kontrabida role.”
