As the launch date for his newest horror-comedy movie Echorsis approaches this month, Alex Medina revealed they had already started filming even while he was still doing a soap opera. “Actually I was doing this while I was shooting Pangako Sa ‘Yo, nung earlier stages pa ng Pangako yun. Challenge siya kasi andun ka sa set ng Pangako tapos pupunta ka sa set ng Echorsis sa Pampanga kailangan mo mag-bakla-bakla, ganun (laughs). On the surface it might seem na light film lang siya pero honestly mahirap siya, hindi siya basta basta lang. Nahirapan ako physically for this role. Nag-enjoy ako executing it and so far yung feedback naman ng director namin is that he liked it so I’m excited and scared as well kung anong mangyayari,” he told Push.com.ph.
After playing the role of Angelica Panganiban’s lover in the Primetime Bida hit series, Alex admitted that he wishes they could have extended the soap. "Yung character ni Simon kasi there’s so much more na gusto ko pa i-explore. Pero yun na yun eh. I couldn’t ask for more naman talaga. Thankful ako to be part of the show,” he said.
For his current role, Alex says he took inspiration from his gay friends. "Kahit na marami akong gay friends it’s still so different when I’m doing it eh. Madali lang yung watching them, to emulate it, pero doing the whole movie or half of the movie na bakla ako mahirap siya eh. Hindi pala siya biro. Marami akong pegs actually. Nag-decide kami nung director na we didn’t want na any fixed lang na isang character. I wanted to use rin more of different personalities ng mga gays. Iba ibang eksena iba iba ginagamit ko na personality pero not necessarily gumaya ako ng isang tao,” he explained.
Alex said his dad veteran actor Pen Medina was very supportive of him playing a different kind of role. "Yung dad ko nagustuhan niya yung script. Sabi niya, ‘Okay ito, parang trip trip ito.’ You know kasi veteran na siya so madali na para sa kanya pero for me it was a new thing so I had to get into it. Mas mahirap to get into it kasi pag gay role talaga kahit si dad nahirapan sa Aso ni San Roque sa GMA 7 eh. Nakuha naman namin so sana okay yung turnout (laughs),” he shared.
With acting in his blood, Alex said that he does not feel pressured to compete with his dad and brother Ping when it comes to acting. "Not necessarily siguro. Hindi ko naman ever naisip yung pressure with daddy. Siuguro yung pressure ng galing I guess. May pangalan naman ako, iba naman yung ano ko. Yung talent talaga I have to hone it pa. Iba yung when you see him in action talagang hands down talaga ako,” he added.
The 29-year-old Echorsis star also said he is looking forward to working with director Jerrold Tarog again in another historical movie. The Heneral Luna director is rumored to be working on the script on the life of Gregorio del Pilar. "Sana. I think meron kung itutuloy yung Goyong I think I have a part there. Minimal lang din ako siguro sa intro lang. Nung sumikat yung Heneral Luna hindi namin in-expect kasi, nagulat na lang kami. Ako kasi I surrendered to the fact that no one watches historical theme sa kultura natin. Not naman no one pero kasi it happened na kasi before. Gumawa kami ng Supremo, ng El Presidente, Bonifacio: Unang Pangulo, so ito parang inisip ko, ‘Oh my gosh kaya ba ito?’ Pero it turned around eh. May magic talaga si direk Jerrold Tarog eh. In Jerrold we trust (laughs),” he explained.
From playing a serious role on TV to a lighter one on the big screen, Alex said he is working hard to promote his film so that more people can enjoy it with a longer cinema run. "Hopefully the funny side. Siguro gusto ko na lang makita yung side na makakabawi ng ginastos sa pelikula (laughs). Sana kasi yun yung wish talaga namin kasi alam mo naman sa cinema first day pag wala pull out agad. Sad lang. Yan lagi press release ko, ‘Please watch it on April 13 para hindi ma-pull out agad kasi masakit eh.’ The first three days will define what will happen sa Echorsis so yun yung important. Every time I advertise I say watch it on April 13 kasi mawawala yan kagad pag hindi niyo pinanuod,’” he admitted.
