Gerald Anderson launches a foundation to help save lives
030615-GERALD.jpgAs he turns 27 this year, Gerald Anderson said he is excited to launch the first Gerald Anderson Foundation’s K9 Search & Rescue unit on his birthday, March 7. “Meron kaming mga trained specialized dogs na we trained. It’s about putting a team together a search and rescue team with canines na trained para maghanap ng mga missing people and alam natin na maraming nangyayaring calamities sa bansa natin. Hindi natin ma-sa-stop yan eh. Mother Nature yan. Ang puwede lang natin magawa ay mabawasan yung mga taong namamatay or masasaktan and this is the best way I think na kaya kong gawin. Kasi tuwing may calamities I think I’ve always done my part with ABS-CBN. Pumunta kami ng Tacloban with my friends pero parang may kulang, parang laging may mga puwede pa akong gawin and ito na yun,” he shared.

So far Gerald and his team (which includes his younger brother Ken) have four dogs which comprise their K9 unit. With the launch of his foundation, Gerald hopes to get more funding which he is currently doing out of his own pocket "It’s still in the works pa. Last year kami nag-start and I’m still building the team. Last year kami nag-start mag-training So once ma-launch and nag-start na yung donations mas madali na yung proseso. Masakit pero alam ko I’m doing something that I love so okay lang. Kaya nga excited na ako ma-launch din yung foundation kasi kailangan din namin yung mga donations kasi in the future gusto ko magkaroon ng sariling headquarters, sariling kennel na hindi ko makuha kasi I have so many mouths to feed also hindi lang mga aso (laughs),” he admitted.

Aside from helping find missing people during times of calamity, Gerald said his foundation can also help missing people in general. "Yes please. Kahit walang calamity or basta may nawawala gagawin namin yan, tutulong kami kung ano yung maibibigay namin na tulong. Yung mga aso na ito they’re really amazing with how they can search at kung gaano nila kamahal yung tao. So yun yung naging motivation ko para buohin itong Gerand Anderson Foundation,” he said.

The Kapamilya actor explained in detail how his K9 unit works starting with his own dog whom he trained personally. Excited nga ako,” he admitted.

If he hadn’t entered showbiz, Gerald said he would have pursued something closer to what his foundation hopes to achieve. "Natutuwa ako kasi it’s always been a passion for me na pumasok sa military nung bata ako kasi I come from a military family. So itong K9 unit is a way of fulfilling yugn passion na nandito pa,” he added.
