Richard Yap on ‘Mano Po 7’: ‘May mga friends ako na ganito yung buhay’

121316-RichardYap_PUSH.jpgAs the star of the family drama Mano Po 7 Chinoy, Richard Yap admitted there is pressure to be headlining the popular Regal Films franchise. "Of course may konting pressure talaga sa amin. We know that the past Mano Po movies have been very, very successful. Ang daming mga awards na nakuha. Basta dito we just did our best. We think that this is the most authentic Mano Po because kami yung medyo newer Chinese na nakakasalita talaga and we have real Chinese conversations in this movie and our director is Chinese also. The writer is Chinese also so talagang yung actors, directors, all have that Chinese background so we try to make this film as realistic and true as possible to the actual events. So hopefully magugustuhan ng lahat ng tao,” he shared.

Out of all the projects he has done, the Fil-Chinese actor shared why this role is the one he can relate to the most. "I think this has got to be the closest thing that you can compare to something that is real in the Chinese community. At least dito may experience talaga ako na may mga friends ako na ganito yung buhay nila. So you can say it’s really very close to my heart kasi I get to play a part of people who I know have lives like this and I hope that it helps them when they see the film,” he explained.

The Mano Po 7 star admitted that the story of the family in this movie will hit close to home especially in the chinoy community. "Nakaka-relate ako dito sa Mano Po Chinoy kasi there are a lot of Chinese families na parang ganun din ang situation nila. Usually kasi the father is so caught up with being successful in business na wala na siya masyadong oras para sa mga anak niya. So eto yung mga problema sa modern Chinese families. Pero dito niyo makikita kung paano nila ma-re-resolve yung conflict,” he added.

At 49 years old, Richard said he never expected to become the poster boy for Chinese-Filipinos in the country ever since he formally entered showbiz as Kim Chiu’s strict father in the Kapamilya soap My Binondo Girl in 2011. "I don’t put it into my head. I’m just doing what I have to do which is trying to entertain the people who come to watch the film. I’m just glad na hanggang ngayon there’s still a lot of support for me in all the projects that I’ve done. So I’m really very happy and I feel really blessed,” he admitted.

For 2017, Richard said he is gearing up for a new series but is looking forward to just ending the year with his loved ones. "As of now wala pang concrete plans but I know that we’re going to be starting a teleserye baka by January or February. Hindi pa sinasabi kung sino yung cast. We will know by next year. Usually sa Christmas we have dinner together the whole family kasama namin yung mga kapatid ng wife ko. Yung mga kapatid ko rin we set aside a day na nagkikita kita kami and we eat somewhere or kundi sa bahay lang. Pero we usually make it a point na magsama sama kami lahat,” he said.
