Mercedes Cabral: ‘Kung sinabi nila na naging disrespectful ako because of the cuss words, paano itong mga taong ito na naging disrespectful din sa akin?’
Acclaimed independent film star Mercedes Cabral tearfully recalled the backlash that she suffered from after her controversial Facebook post about the Metro Manila Film Festival.
Although she did not name any names in the said post, many thought that it was for Regal Films matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde who commented that independent films are not “apt” for the MMFF season.
In an interview during the pocket press conference of her MMFF entry Oro, Mercedes wasn’t able to hold back her tears after things got out of hand following her post.
“Well, oo, kasi nga masakit. Nagiging personal siya eh, na nakakaapekto,” she started.
According to Mercedes, she’s very well aware that her post would bring about adverse effects on her career.
“Pero andun yung may mga tao din kasi na nagpapasalamat ako, kasi nasa likod ko pa rin na, ‘We’re here, alam ko, ganyan lang personality mo,’” she said.
But what really got to Mercedes was how the incident affected the people she loves.
"So, ang sa akin, mas nagkaroon ako ng effect, doon sa effect niya sa parents ko na parang, ‘Pinalaki niyo ba nang ganyan, na masyadong disrespectful?’ So, that’s it," said the actress.
She reiterated that she was the one who raised concerns about Mother Lily’s statement.
"So, bakit niyo pagsasabihan ng ganyan magulang ko? May problema kayo sa akin, so, okay, sige, tirahin niyo ako nang tirahin," she said. "Kung sinabi nila na naging disrespectful ako because of the cuss words, paano itong mga taong ito na naging disrespectful din sa akin?”
The actress underscored that she heard so much from various people.
"As in sobrang bastos yung ginagawa talaga sa akin. May mga nababasa ako na mga lumalabas na, alam mo yun, binabalik yung... basta kung anong mga pambabastos yung ginagawa nila na yun lang, even in the issue,” she said.
Mercedes apologized and pointed out that that, as a star, she was just “very passionate” about the issue at hand.
"You have all the power, you have all the voice to give these people. Like, yun yung isa sa priority eh na ginagawa din ng filmmaker. Just give voice to the people who can’t speak," she ended.
