Richard Yap: ‘I’m sure meron parin namang people who are looking for the Mano Po franchise.’
Richard Yap finally spoke up after news broke out that their movie failed to make it to the list of eight official 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival entries.
Mano Po 7 Chinoy, like The Super Parental Guardians and Enteng Kabisote 10 and the Abangers, is now set to hit theaters earlier than the actual festival season. The seventh movie in the successful franchise stars Richard, Jean Garcia, Jake Cuenca, Enchong Dee, Jessy Mendiola, Eric Quizon, Janella Salvador, Marlo Mortel, Kean Cipriano, and Jana Agoncillo will be out in cinemas nationwide come December 14.
“We’re still hoping na magustuhan ng mga tao ito and they will come out to watch even if it’s not part of the festival,” Richard said in an interview during their movie’s grand media conference on Tuesday afternoon.
“I’m sure meron parin namang people who are looking for the Mano Po franchise. Hopefully we’ll do well pa rin sa takilya,” he continued.
Apart from Eric, the entire cast, including their director Ian Loreños, are all first-timers to the Mano Po franchise.
Is Richard pressured over the fact that he was the movie’s “captain of the ship?”
“Akala ko kasi picture ito ni Enchong talaga eh kaya hindi ako nape-pressure,” he swiftly joked.
On a serious note, Richard stressed that he was able to get over the pressure all thanks to his able co-stars.
“Ang gagaling ng mga kasama ko dito so it lessens the pressure sa akin tsaka hindi ko naman siya masyadong iniisip eh. Basta trabaho lang. Iniisip ko lang kung ano ang pinagawa sakin ni Direk,” he said.
But Richard assured fans that he did his best in portraying the role that was given to him, adding, “Hopefully it would be enough for the audience.”
Mano Po 7 is Richard’s reunion with Janella, whom he co-starred with in the two-year hit daytime soap Be Careful With My Heart back in 2012.
The cast shot parts of their movie in Taiwan some months back and, according to Richard, the experience became very memorable because they were able to experience being a family abroad. But another event that made their Taiwan trip unforgettable was the super typhoon that hit the area at that time.
“We were in Kaohsiung going back to Taipei to shoot other scenes for that day kaya lang ‘yun ‘yung may Super Typhoon sa Taiwan which was about to become category 12 ba ‘yun sa kanila which is a super typhoon. So hindi makaandar ang bus ng maayos sa sobrang lakas ng hangin,” he narrated.
According to Richard, their team opted to stay at a gasoline station “because natatakot ang driver na mag-overturn ang bus and since it seemed to be letting up we decided to go and find a better place to stay.
“Buti nalang we only had to stay there for about four to five hours and we were staying under the bridge. Gutom na kami and then wala pang signal so ang hirap lang,” he shared.
Thankfully, no one on their team was harmed during that incident.
Catch Richard along with Jean Garcia, Jake Cuenca, Enchong Dee, Jessy Mendiola, Eric Quizon, Janella Salvador, Marlo Mortel, Kean Cipriano and Jana Agoncillo in Mano Po 7 Chinoy this coming December 14 in cinemas nationwide
