Jessy met several Korean stars including Chae Yung An, Cho Jin Woong, Honey Lee, Shing Dong Yup, Son Joong Ki, and Kim Min Seok.
Jessy Mendiola has made history by being the first Filipina to take home the Best Asia Pacific Star award from the 4th Asia Pacific Actors Network (APAN) Star Awards on Sunday, October 2.
In an exclusive interview with PUSH, the Banana Sundae star shared that she’s very much grateful for bagging her first-ever international award and that there are people who are recognizing what she contributes to the industry.
“I think yung fulfillment na nadadala mo ‘yung Pilipinas sa ibang bansa at ‘yung sinasabi nila na first-ever Filipina recipient from South East Asia. It’s a big achievement for me but I’ve never really received an award. I did before but not as big as this tapos international pa,” she said.
Jessy, who learned of the invitation for the award’s night some months back, confessed that she initially did not make a huge fuss about it.
“Sa family ko, ano tuwang tuwa sila na nanalo ako at first kasi akala ko hindi big deal. Eh yun pala sobrang laking bagay niya. Proud naman sila sa akin, ayun shine-share na nila lahat sa Facebook,” she replied as to the question with whom she first shared the feat with.
During the event, Jessy was able to rub elbows with a number of Korean personalities including Coffee Prince star Chae Yung An, actor Cho Jin Woong, TV hosts Honey Lee and Shing Dong Yup, as well as the lead star of the hit Koreanovela Descendants of the Sun Son Joong Ki and its other cast member Kim Min Seok.
Jessy admitted that she got star struck meeting Son Joong Ki saying, “Siyempre nung una ako ano ‘yun ano ‘yun. Pagtingin ko, ah siya pala ‘yun. Kasi nakakagulat lang na katabi mo na pala.”
“Parang hindi totoo kapag nakikita mo ‘yung mga stars. ‘Di ba sa atin mahilig tayo sa mga Koreanovela tapos nakikita mo ‘yung mga ‘yun sa TV tapos ngayon katabi mo na. Pinapakilala ka sakanila,” she added about the aforementioned personalities.
More than being in awe, Jessy recalled being blown away by the amount of respect that she got from them.
“Nakakatuwa kasi ‘yung reaction ko sa kanila, same sa reaction nila sa akin. Like ‘yung respect nandoon na, ako ang tingin ko sa kanila big stars, sila ang tingin nila sa akin malaki akong star sa bansa ko,” she shared. “Ganon ang respeto nila sa kapwa artista nila. So nakakatuwa kasi very accommodating sila and at the same time humble sila.”
Although she has received an award from APAN, Jessy did not mind noting “Sana manalo ako ng award doon [sa Pilipinas].”
Jessy’s chances of winning an award may increase in the coming months as her two films might just be competing in the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival.
“Meron akong dalawang movies coming up, I’m not sure yet if both are entries for MMFF. Meron akong Extra Service kasama ko doon si Coleen [Ortega] and Arci [Muñoz] tsaka Mano Po 7. But if ever sobrang laking bagay no’n pero given the roles na ganon, para narin akong nanalo ng award kasi ‘yung movie ko entry siya sa MMFF,” she ended.
