International singer Arnel Pineda shared what made him turn away from drugs during his guest appearance on the morning talk show, Magandang Buhay on Tuesday, October 25.
According to Arnel, the love of his life Cherry became his wake-up call.
“Birthday ko, 2003 with my new live in partner pa noon kasi kakahiwalay ko lang talaga noon sa asawa ko, kaka-annul lang. Tapos na-meet ko siya, si Cherry so nagsama kami. And one time, birthday ko, tapos syempre, I mean having been in to drugs for 20 years eh siya, kagagaling pa lang niya sa relationship na gano’n din, so parang siya, trauma na. Nakita niyang gano’n, parang walang mararating ‘yung magiging direksyon ‘nung buhay niya so nag-impake siya right then and there. Nagpaalam siya, birthday ko, naghahappy-happy ako with a few friends. Sabi niya, aalis na siya,” he narrated, adding that he felt like a bucket of cold water was dumped on him.
“Pagkatapos no’n, the next day, walang rehab-rehab, that’s it. So 2003, I’ve been sober for the past 13 years,” Arnel said, implying his decision to finally leave his addiction for the love of his life.
The Journey band vocalist also gave an advice to people with the same experience who also want to turn away from this vice. “Ikaw ang may control talaga sa buhay mo. ‘Wag mong iasa sa magulang mo, sa kapatid mo o sa best friend mo. Kailangan talaga manggaling sa’yo. Solid na change, sa’yo dapat,” he said.
Arnel also advised parents to check on the kind of friends that their children have. Likewise, he said that kids should also learn to choose friends who will be good influences to them.
