Lea Salonga advises Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach to not let critics bring her down
010816-lea_main.jpgIn her open letter published on Inquirer.net, world renowned Filipino actress and singer Lea Salonga gave some advice to Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who is currently in New York to fulfill her duties as the pageant titlist.

Lea, who has also lived in New York as a theater actress, began by congratulating Pia on her win and commending her perseverance that got her to where she is now. She also spoke about the things Pia may encounter as the Philippine’s pride such as meeting prominent people and Filipinos from all over the world.

Likewise reminding her of people who will be critical of her every move, she advised her not to let them bring her down.

“There will be millions of pairs of eyes always looking in your direction, not only wishing you well, but also waiting for you to make a mistake, to trip and fall, to look anything less than a Miss Universe (remember Miss Universe 1996 Alicia Machado, and how the world seemed to come down on her for gaining a few pounds?). Do not allow anyone to take you down even one notch, whatever happens, even if that ‘anyone’ happens to be another Filipino,” Lea wrote.

In the latter part of the letter, Lea offered tips to make Pia’s stay in New York a memorable one.

Lea suggested that Pia watch Broadway shows in New York, even recommending a few shows. Likewise, she also suggested a few museums which the Miss Universe 2015 can visit in her free time.

Urging Pia to dine in what she referred to as a city, “chock-full of amazing places to eat,” she suggested that Pia burn down the calories by taking a walk. “This is a great place to walk everywhere. Arm yourself with a good pair of walking shoes (and for the winter, thick-soled boots). Dress warmly, and get going,” Lea said.

Lastly, she wrote that Pia should just enjoy, “This year is going to whiz by like a whirlwind, so mine the whole experience for what it’s worth. Take lots of pictures, see and do as much as you can—and enjoy yourself!”
