Karel Marquez returns to theater as local Anastasia Steele
012316-KAREL.jpgAfter eight years of being absent from the theater stage, Karel Marquez is finally coming back as part of the rowdy and raunchy local run of the 50 Shades! The Musical Parody.

For her comeback role, Karel veered away from her usual “wholesome” characters from High School Musical and Beauty and the Beast, as she would be reprising the role of Anastasia Steele. This character is based on the protagonist of E.L. James’s best-selling erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey where the parody was based.

In an interview during the musical’s grand press conference, Karel admitted that she was initially hesitant to audition for the show.

“Una ‘Fifty Shades,’ parang ano ‘yon? No way, I watched the movie and no, no,” she said referring to the blockbuster Hollywood flick.

After being convinced to try out, Karel herself was able to discover that it was totally far from the book and the film.

“So tama nga, it’s funny, it’s different from the movie talaga. We’re making fun of it,” she shared.

What’s good about the musical is that Filipinos will have the chance to see the exact same one as what was played in Las Vegas and New York.

“The Anastasia Steele I’m doing the exact role like what they’re doing in Las Vegas. Exact everything. All the positions and the words. Probably may mga added Tagalog lang para lang makuha ang punchline,” she explained.

As a quiet woman, Karel said she somehow relate to Anastasia’s timid persona. But, she stressed, “Everyone one has a naughty side. So, no matter how pa-demure you feel, there’s always a naughty side inside of you.”

“So I think Manila will have fun watching this. You’ll end up really laughing and talking about the play afterwards,” she added.

What does she hope for the audience, especially the women, to take away after seeing their show?

“At the end of the play you’ll realize that we all have this inner goddess inside us. No matter how conservative we are. Don’t be shy. It’s okay. We all have that,” she said.

“Hopefully let’s see. After this let’s see what goes kung okay na mag-hit dito sa Manila. And if merong auditions or if someone calls me to try and audition for a play that I really like, why not? But if I have a soap hindi ko talaga pwedeng isabay. It’s just a matter nalang talaga kung ano ang mauuna,” she ended.

Catch Karel in 50 Shades! The Musical Parody starting this February 12 at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza.
