When it's trailer first set tongues wagging last month for its controversial portrayal of the medical representative profession, Ex With Benefits redeemed itself with the premiere of the full-length film. The story, although not surprisingly peppered with a lot of intimate scenes between its two lead stars Derek Ramsay and Coleen Garcia, is at the heart of it, a sincere and imperfect love story that every Pinoy who's ever been in love can relate to, hopeless romantic or not.
Derek Ramsay's comeback project with Star Cinema portrays him in a role which is not totally unfamiliar territory to the actor in reel and real life. As highly successful doctor Adam, he is well-off, into sports, and popular with the ladies. He is also still hung up on his college sweetheart (whom he refers to as his “T.OT.G.A” or The One That Got Away) one decade after she disappeared after they broke up in medical school. More than the display of abs and that perfectly chiseled jawline, Derek once again proves he is more than just a pretty face with his controlled portrayal of a heartbroken man.
Playing the role of his ex-girlfriend is Coleen Garcia as Arki, who resurfaces in Adam's life as a medical representative who needs him to endorse her company's new product. Although many wondered if choosing a daring role was right for Coleen's launching mainstream movie, the Pasion de Amor actress proves she is ready for more headlining roles as the liberated yet broken woman who will do anything just to get her job done. As Adam and Arki cross paths again, Adam seizes the opportunity to try and win back her heart and discovers new truths about their lives. Ex With Benefits is sentimental but not sappy, sexy but not obscene and ultimately speaks the truth about what it takes to prove true love.
Ex With Benefits also stars Meg Imperial, Rayver Cruz, Kitkat Favia, Carmi Martin and directed by Gino Santos under Star Cinema and Viva Films. Now showing in theaters nationwide starting September 1.
