John “Sweet” Lapus is back to doing soaps. Almost a year since he became part of Mirabella, John is part of the afternoon soap Doble Kara starring Julia Montes.

During the show’s press conference, John revealed that he will be portraying a gay role on the soap as the “godmother” of twins Sara and Kara.

Despite being in an all-too-familiar role, John assured that he would be giving it his best. “Basta iba, alam mo naman nangangarir ako sa iba. Alam mo naman ang daming bakla ngayon sa soap. Halos lahat na ng soap my bakla. Na-realize ko lang the other day noong may nag-post sa Instagram. So lalaban naman ako, patay kung patay,” he said laughingly.

Although he has been in the business for over two decades now, John still refuses to be considered as “The Best Gay Star.”

“Nako hindi naman. Kasi kapag sinasabi mo na ikaw ang ‘pinaka’ pressure as it is,” John said.

According to John, he would rather be considered to be “among the best” gay stars in the business even if it’s added pressure on his part.

While he takes his roles seriously, John lamented about the growing number of gay stars who fail to add a certain dimension to their gay roles.

“Kasi nga sa pelikula o TV pare-pareho lang bakla ang role ko so merong conscious effort talaga on my end na mag-iba ng character, mag-iba ng looks. Ito pati boses iniba ko,” he shared. “Para naman kasi ako mismo kapag nakakanood ako ng mga TV shows especially ‘yung mga teens. ‘Yung iba lang ang pangalan nila doon sa huli nilang soap pero iisa lang ang acting, iisa lang ang itsura, naiba lang ‘yung pangalan.”
