On Aquino and Abunda Tonight, world-renowned musician David Foster invited singers to watch his concert The Hitman Returns: David Foster and Friends Asia Tour 2015 tonight, August 18, at the Araneta Coliseum. “I have the ability to sign somebody on the spot to a recording contract,” David said.
David has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry like Oprah, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand to name a few, but David revealed that he is not always friends with everyone he’s worked with. He said Barbra is a close friend. “We haven’t made music in 25 years but we have stayed friends, we have dinners, she comes to our house…” David added that he is also close with Oprah.
It isn’t the same with Whitney as David shared, “we had incredible success together but we weren’t friends. We weren’t enemies. But I didn't travel in her circle, she didn't travel in mine.” David then recounted a special moment he had with Whitney when they discovered, randomly while working together, their same love for Earth, Wind and Fire. “We sat at the piano for about an hour and did Earth, Wind and Fire songs that night.” David said, “It was my best moment with Whitney ever.” David poignantly remembered, “We probably bonded a friendship that night, but shortly after she passed away.”
Asked how he deals with powerful women he’s worked with, David answered, “I have six sisters, a very strong mother, five daughters, and three ex-wives. I don't profess to know anything more about women. They’re very complicated, but I at least have that edge of having the sister and the daughters…”
David chose heartbreak as more stimulating than being in love. “When I sink in the piano I never think of happy moments. I always go to that deepest darkest place.” David wasquick to point out that he has just realized that himself. “I’m sorry to say I’m just realizing [this]. I’ve never really articulated that before.” David credited host Boy Abunda for bringing that realization out of him.
Asked how Filipino talents stand out, David said that Asian artists copy American music and that it’s been ongoing for decades, but David points out, “Asia is at the tipping point, tipping it to make it their own sound. In the next five years, there’s going to be a superstar coming from Asia.”
He also said why a place at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, given to him two years ago, is very special to him. “It’s full circle for me.” David shared how he started his career at the Capitol Records building in 1973 and shortly after, “Beatles changed my life, I was a classical musician until ‘She Loves You’ came on the radio. I got to meet and work with all of them.” David continued, “When I got my star in Hollywood Walk of Fame I got it right next to Beatles, in front of Capitol Records. Full Circle.”
On Fast Talk, the best singer for David is Andrea Bocelli and the best song is “Send In the Clowns.” He also thinks Taylor Swift is a genius and he chooses her over Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry.
Before his interview ended, David praised Boy, “I’ve been interviewed all over the world. You bring an energy that is very, very seldom seen.”
