‘Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady’ aims to wow audiences at Greenbelt, Makati until July 26.
After a successful first run at the PETA theater earlier this year, Dalanghita Productions' ambitious yet thoroughly enjoyable all-original musical Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady
gives more theater fans the chance to catch the “improved” version this month at Onstage in Greenbelt theater, Makati from July 4 to 26. But even with acclaimed writer and director Carlo Vergara admitting that he took out eight pages from the original script, the dual language production still runs a little under three hours. “Sa script I took out about eight pages of the dialogue, bits here and there. As much as possible I tried to keep the juicy parts in pero eight pages is the most that I could do,” Vergara admitted during the press preview night held last July 2 at the Onstage Greenbelt theater in Makati city.
The musical still revolves around the story of sisters Mely and Viva. Mely, a 35-year-old high school graduate who applies for a job as the househelp of Fuwerza Filipinas, the most popular superhero team of the Republic who are also English-speaking, mestizos and mestizas. Her younger sister Viva on the other hand, is unwittingly duped into working for the Kayumanggilas, an underground power-hungry rebel group who aim to topple Fuwerza Filipinas through the powers they gain from a secret substance called Chemical Q. What ensues is a story of love and mayhem which all make for an interesting mix on stage.
This second run also includes some cast changes due to some of the original cast having previous commitments like Menchu Lauchengco Yulo who is currently in Bituing Walang Ningning the musical. Her role as Madre de Dios, leader of Fuwerza Pilipinas is taken over by Sheila Valderrama-Martinez and Astarte Abraham alternately.
Lead star Frenchie Dy (who has Bituin Escalante as alternate) admitted she had to adjust to working in a bigger venue. “Mas malaki yung stage so mas hinihingal ako (laughs). At saka kailangan mas bigger yung movements at mas project yung voice,” she shared. The former Star in a Million contestant revealed she had a definite peg in mind when playing the role of Mely. “Meron kasi akong yaya for 32 years so siya yung ginawa kong peg ko. Sobrang mahal na mahal ko siya na yung character ko gusto ko parang same na nagmamahal ng tao,” she said.
Dalanghita productions aims to elevate Filipino theater to the level that it can rival Broadway plays. “Proud na proud kami sa materyal na inihahatid namin sa inyo kaya we want more people to see it. Nakita namin sa reactions sa Facebook, sa reaction ng press, dahil dun ginagawa namin ito para mas marami pa ang makasaksi sa experience na ito,” says Dalanghita Productions head Ansis Sy.
