During one of the two live viewing parties of the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight at the annual Star Magic Games held in La Salle Greenhills gym at May 3, Kapamilya celebrities and guests were resent to cheer for the "People's champ."
Seated front row and center at the gym were Gerald Anderson, Jason Abalos, Rayver Cruz, and Young JV. Also spotted all over the venue were Julia Barretto, Matt Evans, Jerome Ponce, Ejay Falcon among others. The crowd went wild with every successful jab Manny Pacquiao made and cheered as he seemingly won most of the 12 rounds during the much-awaited match. When the bell rang at the final round, it seemed apparent the crowd was anything but happy with the technical decision awarding the win to Floyd Mayweather, which let him retain his crown as a unbeaten fighter.
Gerald Anderson says the loss hit him hard not just because he comes from the same province of General Santos city as Pacman but also because he had always been an avid supporter.
"At the end of the day Manny is a first-class pound-for-pound fighter para sa akin. Lumaki siya kung saan ako lumaki sa isang small town sa southernmost point in the Philippines which is Gensan. Pinapanuod siya ng buong mundo and kahit natalo siya we should still be proud of him," he tells Push.com.ph.
Gerald adds that it will take a while to shake off the loss, "Mahirap. Pero ganun talaga. Hindi naman dahil natalo siya at talo na siya. Ang dami pa rin niyang na-i-inspire, ang dami niyang nagpapasaya. He brought his country together. We're always proud of him."
Rayver Cruz also says the decision was hard to accept but is proud of Pacquiao.
"Lumaban tayo pero we also have to accept the decision. Pero proud pa rin ako kasi lumaban talaga siya. Kitang kita naman ng lahat yun eh," he says. His teammates Jason Abalos takes a more technical view of the fight, "Hindi rin kasi naging agresibo si Pacquiao pero talagang magaling lang si Mayweather sa depensa. Pero proud pa rin kami sa kanya. Mula sa unang matalo si Pacquiao proud pa rin kami sa kanya. Sa layo ng inabot niya di ba? Isa talaga siyang important part ng Pilipinas."
Xian Lim says he enjoyed watching the exciting match.
"Grabe, magaling ang laban sobra. Intense. Para sa akin champion talaga si Manny Pacquiao. It was a great game. Mayweather played it smart pero sa akin Pacquiao pa rin ang the best. Siyempre gusto ko manalo si Pacquiao pero now we're looking forward to a rematch," he shares.
Out of all the artists, Gerald Anderson was the most visibly affected and says it is not easy to shake off the disappointment.
The Nathaniel star says he does have a message for the Pambansang Kamao. "Manny ikaw pa rin ang the best, no matter what. Tumakbo yung kalaban mo eh. Ang hirap talaga habulin pag tumatakbo."
