The All You Need is Pag-ibig star also defends host Steve Harvey's announcement mistake.
With the much talked about retraction and eventual announcement of Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as the winner of this year's Miss Universe pageant held in Las Vegas on December 21 (Manila time), Kris Aquino came to host Steve Harvey's defense. The All You Need is Pag-ibig
actress said she can understand why the American comedian mistakenly proclaimed Miss Colombia as the winner instead of first runner-up. "We were watching and you know i-di-defend ko si Steve Harvey kasi ilang times na kaming nag-PGT (Pilipinas Got Talent)
tapos ilang times normally kasi ang sasabihin sa ‘yo i-a-announce mo yung winner tapos siguro siya hindi na-briefing ng maayos at akala niya iba," she explained to the media during her solo presscon held at her home in Greenmeadows, Quezon City.
Kris said she can also sympathize with how Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez reacted after the crown was taken from her just a few moments after she was mistakenly announced as Miss Universe. Kris explained the public should be more understanding about how Pia's competitor must feel. "Kasi ‘di ba si Modern Family si Sofia Vergara kamukhang-kamukha ni Miss Colombia galit na galit? Di ba yun yung mga post daw niya ngayon? True naman nasa 'yo na yung korona kinuha pa," she shared
The Queen of All Media also said she was impressed with how Pia handled the final question and answer portion. "She answered so well. Sabi ko nga ang tapang niya kasi di ba nung tinanong siya about the U.S bases ang tapang niya! Pero I agree with her. Because in a world where China is so strong we need them. Let's be honest. Kailangan natin sila and let's be friendly with them ‘di ba? Tapos tama siya na sinagot niya yun. Totoo naman eh, kung i-survey mo naman majority ng Pinoy (will say) we love Americans tapos yung second na sinabi niya about HIV awareness totoo din naman kasi di ba ang nangyayari ngayon because may promiscuity and ang malala dun yung nag-she-share ng needles kasi yung rampant drug use kaya kumakalat? Kaya okay rin na nasabi niya yun. Ang galing niya, gusto ko siya," she revealed.
Even when assessing the pageant as a whole, Kris said Pia really did made a mark. Pero dun sa sagot naman magpakatotoo tayo. Tayo yung maganda yung sagot ‘di ba? I don't know why pero normally ang nananalo talaga is the one who looks different from everybody else and then finally ‘di ba Pinoy designers na ang ginamit. ‘Yun ‘yun. At least now forever na sa history ng Miss Universe tumatak na tayo. Sad lang talaga na yung moment and may nag-boo and all. Pero that's life. When you join a competition there will be winners and there will be losers, praise God tayo ang winner," she added.
When Pia won the Binibining Pilipinas pageant earlier this year, her name was immediately linked to Kris's older brother PNoy. Kris said the beauty queen had already earned her approval with how she dealt with the issue. "All of us, kaming mga sisters from before pa we liked her nung na-ru-rumor that they were dating because one she could've easily denied it, that was the time na yung SAF big deal (regarding slain police members of the Special Action Force) and Noy was being hit left and right but she spoke up for him so sabi ko, 'Ay, matapang itong girl na ito.' Yung hindi nang-iiwan, hindi nag-de-deny kaya good for her, bongga," she recalled.
Kris also divulged why she thinks her brother and Pia did not go beyond the dating stage. "Oo naman (I approved of her) pero I don't think she liked Noy (laughs). I think she entertained him but the thing is you can tell from her character eh, single minded. So kailangan ito ang focus ko muna. Grabe naman di ba nangalahati yung katawan (niya)? At lahat nung training na pinagdaanan. Pero di ba pinadalhan ng flowers (ni PNoy) bago umalis? Gusto ko nga alamin kung nag-text eh (laughs)," she said in jest.
