Richard Gomez says he does not want to be a strict dad

110115-richard_up.jpgAs the patriarch of the Fontanilla family in the drama series You’re My Home, Richard Gomez admitted he could not imagine going through what his latest TV role goes through which is the agony of having their young child kidnapped. The 49-year-old actor said thankfully the only thing he has to worry about with his family is finding time for them when his shooting schedule gets hectic. “Pag nagiging hand-to-mouth shooting na kami dati sabi ko sa kanila, ‘Kailangan dalawin niyo na kami sa set kasi hindi na tayo masyado nagkikita.’ I even told (my daughter) Juliana she had to visit us on the set. ‘Pag may time kayo kami ang dadalawain niyo kasi kung iintayin mo lang na uuwi kami, uuwi kami para matulog tapos magigising para umalis ulit para sa set,’” he said.

Now that his only daughter Juliana has turned 15, Richard said she understands the nature of his showbiz work. “Wala (problem) kasi alam niya trabaho ito and well siguro she grew into this kind of environment na ito ang trabaho ko so my daughter understands fully kung ano ang ginagawa ko,” he admitted. Even with his work schedule, Richard said he is still a very hands-on parent especially when it comes to Juliana’s male friends. But he also doesn;t want to be too strict on his only child. "As a father, I hope wala pa (suitors) but I’m sure baka merong umiikot ikot sa tabi kasi you know 15. I have to be very protective of our Juliana. i have to be very careful as well na hindi ko naman siya masyado sasakalin. I give her her freedom. I understand when she has to entertain her classmates and friends so I say bring them at home. It’s important for me also na makilala ko yung mga friends niya. It’s important for parents na alam mo sino ba yung nakakasama ng anak mo. Nag-mature na ako di ba? Yung mga pananaw ko sa buhay ganun na (laughs),” he added.

When it comes to talking about boys with his daughter, Richard said that is more his wife Lucy Torres-Gomez’s area of expertise. “Wala, hindi niya pinag-uusapan yun. Siguro kung may ganung mga usapin siya na at saka yung mommy niya yun. Alam ko tinatago nila sa akin, (laughs)” he admitted.

As his daughter matures, Richard said he wants to be supportive of her many varying interests. "She enjoys doing mga sports. Dumating na rin yung time na nakikita niya na, ‘I have to be sexy, dad, and I have to look good.’ Ganun na yung pag-iisip niya so makikita mo nag-wo-workout siya and she plays a lot of volleyball. Today this morning ang sabi niya, ‘Dad, when I come back from school I want to try boxing. Mag-ba-boxing ako sa Elorde.’ Sabi ko, ‘Sige subukan mo,’” he shared.
