Queen of All Media Kris Aquino made history in the Philippines by being the first local celebrity to take on the global ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on live national TV.
Kris allowed herself to be dumped with ice water by her co-host Toni Gonzaga and son Bimby Yap during the live episode of The Buzz on Sunday.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is an online charity campaign seeking disease awareness and financial funding for research of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – a condition that attacks one’s nerve cells that eventually leads to paralysis. The cause of the disease remains to be unknown until this day hence the need for more funding for its research.
It went viral all over social media since last July in the UK and the US with celebrities, athletes, politicians and normal individuals taking on the challenge while being filmed, posting them online and challenging others to do the same. The idea is for the nominated or challenged individuals to comply in 24 hours or allow it to get forfeited and donating a certain amount to ALS research.
Before getting doused with water, Kris explained that it was actor Derek Ramsay that nominated her to the challenge. Although her 24-hour window time has already lapsed, Kris nevertheless did the challenge and donated $100.
She then challenged talk show host Anthony Taberna, her close friend and “asawa” Vice Ganda, and Buzz head writer Darla Sauler to do the challenge as well.
Among the other stars that joined the bandwagon and got drenched were The Voice of the Philippines coaches Lea Salonga , Apl.de.ap, Aga Muhlach, Sandara Park, newly-engaged couple Marian Rivera, Dingdong Dantes, champion boxer Nonito Donaire, basketball superstar brothers Jeron and Jeric Teng, and Kiefer Ravena, among others.
