Pinoy Big Brother Season 1 housemates Nene Tamayo and Chx Alcala believe that so much has changed in the reality show and its participants these days than from how it was when it was first launched almost a decade ago.
For starters they noted in an exclusive interview with Push that the PBB All In housemates today tend to play safe when it comes to executing the tasks given by Big Brother thereby sacrificing the way they showcase who they really are as a person.
"Kasi parang natatakot sila na ma-nominate kapag inaway nila or nagpakatotoo sila," observed Nene.
For the first ever PBB Big Winner, it’s always better to let the world know who you really are as a person.
“Mas okay na magalit sila at least napakita mo at wala kang pagsisisihan pag labas mo ng bahay. Kasi once na mag-hold back ka or may reservations ka paglabas mo ng bahay magsisisi ka 'bakit hindi ko ito ginawa?' Or 'bakit ito ang ginawa ko?' What ifs, what ifs. At least 'pag walang reservations, kapag pinakita mo kung sino ka talaga wala kang pinagsisisihan sana ma-divert na maging huwaran pa sila ng mga kabataan,” she said.
Chx, the liberated housemate of the first season, echoed Nene’s point and said, “Kasi kung bad ka, bad ka talaga. Pero kapag bad ka may matututunan kang lesson, malay mo mabago ng mga kasamahan mo, mabago ka nung sitwasyon. Kasi kapag andoon ka pumasok ka tapos hindi mo pinakita 'yung pagkatao mo wala kang maiuuwi oaglabas mo. Walang lesson.”
However despite the stark difference in terms of character and values that the current housemates have compared to their batch, Nene and Chx both consider comparing their respective batches to be unfair.
Nene believes that the main reason why such comparisons exist was because a lot of people have already formed a standard inside their minds as to the kinds of housemates that they want to see inside the famous yellow house.
“Although sinasabi nga nila ang pinakamaganda na season eh 'yung sa amin, hindi mo rin talaga masisisi rin 'yung ibang housemates ngayon kasi nagkakaroon nga ng standards. So merong comparisons. So mahirap rin para sakanila,” shared Nene.
Chx on the other hand believes that the fact that the latter PBB hopefuls already have an idea of what is expected from them inside the house as the reason why there’s a comparison in the first place.
“Parang nagkakaroon na sila ng mga preparations. Unlike before na bahala na kung ano nalang, take it or leave it. Kaya nagkaroon ng comparison which is unfair rin naman for the new housemates,” she explained.(continued on next page)
As seasons passed and with one ending soon enough, several controversies have been linked to the famed reality show. Among them were the tasks that tend to put a persons’ values under the spotlight such as the infamous nude painting challenge in the current season.
To that Nene says, “Sinusubok lang ni Kuya 'yun. Hindi porket nakatira ka sa bahay ni Kuya ay lahat ng gusto niya eh susundin mo.”
Chx agrees with Nene even highlighting that the housemate always has a choice since, “Hindi naman dahil andiyan kana eh puro kana lang yes. You're a housemate not a slave parang ganoon. You have a choice, doon makikita ni Kuya ang personality mo, doon lalabas ‘yon.”
Another issue that a lot of audience find a little disagreeable was the express desire of the housemates to become part of showbiz after the show.
“Nakakalungkot lang kasi 'yun na ang nagiging trend eh. Kumbaga 'yun na ang reality. 'Yun na 'yung nangyayari ngayon na paglabas ko ng PBB house ay showbiz na,” lamented Nene.
Chx on the other hand appreciates the sheer honesty of such housemates. “At least they're being honest unlike 'yung iba na aarte arte na hindi daw tapos 'yun naman talaga 'yung gusto.”
Speaking of being vocal about their emotions, being part of love teams has become a growing trend inside the big brother house, an event which gave birth to the colloquial term “PBB Teens” which was coined due to the lavish flirting among the housemates of the last PBB Teens season in 2012.
“'Yun kasi ang reality ngayon sa Pilipinas na kapag may ka-love team ka, kapag nasa showbiz ka talagang sisikat ka. Alam mo naman ang mga Pilipino kasi mahilig takagang ma-inlove. Mas gusto ng mga Pilipino ang kinikilig so 'yun talaga ang patok,” said Nene, while Chx cited that “faster recall” for the audience becomes possible when you’re part of a love team.
In the end, with PBB All In set to end in a few weeks, Nene and Chx both admitted that they are following this season. In fact they even have their own big winner bets. For Nene, Kapamilya star Jane Oineza should be the winner while Chx is rooting for Brazilian model Daniel Matsunaga.
