Darren began to sing Disney songs at the age of two, which led his relatives to discover his singing potential and urge him to pursue it. Both of Darren’s parents also sing.
He also acknowledged the support of his parents, saying that they sacrificed a lot for him. "Kung may gusto po ako gawin, susuportahan po nila ako dun."
Darren said that his parents, who trained him to be humble and respectful, taught him to speak in Filipino as well. "Pagkarating ko po galing sa school, kung nag-e-English pa rin po ako, sasabihin ho nila na 'Uy, nasa bahay ka na, wala ka na sa school, mag-Tagalog ka naman' so parang dun po ako nasanay sa Tagalog po."
Darren also revealed that at first, his target was to reach the semi-finals of the singing competition only. But when he became part of the top 6, he did his best to become part of the top 4. Host Anthony Taberna asked Darren how he was able to accept defeat graciously when he did not win the contest title. "Dapat expect the unexpected" to avoid getting hurt by false hopes. Nevertheless, he said that he is happy for Lyca Gairanod, the grand champion of The Voice Kids.
His father is staying with him in the Philippines while his mother and his sister have returned to Canada. However, he also said that his father might return to Canada soon, too, so he will be left in the company of his relatives. He also admitted feeling a bit homesick at times.
