Rachelle Ann Go on bashers: 'Ako si Miss Deadma na lang'

030414-rachelle_main.jpgAfter her send-off concert last month, Rachelle Ann Go admitted she is excited to start formal rehearsals as part of this year's Miss Saigon cast in London. Rachelle said she never dreamed an impromptu decision to audition would lead her to this. “Actually wala akong plano mag-audition talaga. I was so scared kasi wala akong training sa acting, sa theater wala talaga. But when Miss Lea Salonga asked me to audition, sabi ko na lang, 'Hindi ako sure, titingnan ko.' sabi niya, 'Naku, huwag ka na mag-isip. Go for it. Mahirap na pagsisihan niyo yung isang bagay pagtanda mo.' So dun na-realize ko na wala namang mawawala kapag nag-audition so that's what I did, I auditioned in November 2012 tapos wala akong expectation, ang feeling ko lang nun gusto ko lang ma-experience kung ano feeling humarap sa mga director at production ng Miss Saigon, that's it,” she recalled.

After initially trying out for the lead role of Kim where she sang “I’d Give My Life For You” as her audition piece, Rachelle ended up being considered for the part of Gigi, the head prostitute. The talented singer said she had to psych herself into wear a bikini onstage. “Hindi naman nila ako tinanong kung okay lang mag-two piece ako. Since revival naman itong Miss Saigon, naka-two piece talaga yung character ni Gigi, sexy kasi siya yung leader sa bar. Sexy yung role ni Gigi. Actually when I read the email that they sent me, hindi ko mapinta yung mukha ko eh (laughs). Two piece kaagad yung pumasok (laughs). Ang unang una kong tinawagan si direk Bobby Garcia bilang wala kasi akong idea sa theater talaga. Nagawa ko puro Disney, puro sweet di ba? Sabi ko, 'Okay lang ba ito direk sexy yung role?' yun yung una kong concern and he told me, 'Don't think twice about it. Go for it Shin, you can do it!' ang pangalawa kong tinawagan asawa ng pastor namin sabi ko, 'Okay lang ba ito naka-two piece ako?' (laughs). Sabi niya ipag-pray mo na muna yan and sabi niya it's just a role and sabi nga ni Miss Lea kapag nasa stage ka na hindi na makikita ng tao yung suot mo, yung boses mo na lang yung pakikinggan nila,” she said.

After news broke out that she got the prestigious role, Rachelle said she had already prepared herself for both positive and negative reactions to the news. “When I got the role of Gigi sa Miss Saigon nagulat ako kasi sa Twitter talaga lumabas lahat. Nakakatuwa. Yung mga bashers hindi maiiwasan eh. Before naaapektuhan ako eh, tao lang naman. Ngayon nasanay na siguro ako kasi ako si Miss Deadma na lang. Pag meron akong nababasang negative comments, wala dini-deadma ko na lang din. Hindi na lang ako nagpapaapekto sa mga ganun,” she said.

Rachelle said she counts herself very lucky to play Gigi, who was pegged as being played by someone less than 20 years old, at the age of 27. Rachelle said she considers this a fitting highlight of her career. “Kasi sakto I'll be celebrating my tenth year this year on March 10 and parang isang malaking regalo ito kasi lagi kong tinatanong, 'Lord san po ba talaga ako? Anong gusto niyo para sa akin?' and feeling ko ibang iba ito sa ginagawa ko talaga bilang pop singer ako dito sa Pilipinas and now sa theater naman ako,” she added.

Rachelle said she was happy to get advice from the original lead star of the musical Lea Salonga when it comes to living on her own abroad. “Sabi niya sa akin when it comes to singing and acting wala siyang mabibigay na advice sa akin bilang sa director na manggagaling yun. Sabi lang niya yung mga shopping malls na dapat kong puntahan (laughs), kung paano sumakay ng train, yung tube na tinatawag doon and yung mga British accent tinuturuan niya ako (laughs). And sabi niya just always take care of your voice kasi pagdating dun yung weather kasi napakalamig sa London and everyday yung show. We'll have eight shows a week so bawal magkasakit tapos wala pang mag-aalaga sa akin dun so kailangan ko talagang ingatan yung boses,” she said.
