American Idol runner up Jessica Sanchez will be singing the Philippine national anthem at the upcoming second face-off of Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley.
Pacman made the announcement himself via his official Twitter account last March 15. “The talented @JessicaESanchez will be singing the Philippines [sic] National Anthem at my fight with @TimBradleyJr on April 12. #PacBradley,” wrote the Sarangani province congressman.
The Filipino-Mexican singer who is currently in the country for a few commitments said that she’s more than happy to perform the national anthem. “I love Manny and I love singing for him. This time I want to see him win. Every time I sing the Philippine national anthem, I just feel so proud. It makes me feel even more like a true Filipino so I'm very proud to sing it for the Manny Pacquiao fight again,” she told ABS-CBN News on Saturday.
Her upcoming performance at the Pac-Bradley 2 fight at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada this coming April 12, will be the third time that she would be performing for Pacman’s bouts. The singer sang during the first fight between Bradley and Pacquiao in June 2012 where she sang the “Star Spangled Banner” while Broadway star Kirby Asunto took on the “Lupang Hinirang.” The second time she was during the boxer-politician’s bout with Brandon Rios in November 2013 in Macau where she sang both the American and Philippine national anthems.
In the same report, Sanchez promised that she would keep her performance simple. “I think I did a pretty good job last time. Everybody pretty much loved it last time. I got so many tweets. They want me to keep it traditional and nice and simple like I did last time. I don't want to change it up too much,” she said.
The National Historical Institute has already called the attention of several singers who performed at Pacquiao’s previous fights due to variations in the singing of the national anthem. Their move was based on Section 37 of Republic Act No. 8491 or Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines which notes that, “The rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.”
Earlier this month Pacquiao also announced on Twitter that American R&B singer Ashanti will be singing the American national anthem.
