Hollywood acting coach Ivana Chubbuck will coach Piolo Pascual, Sam Milby, Gerald Anderson, Xian Lim, and other Star Magic artists during her two-day workshop.
With lots of stars wanting to make it to Hollywood or break into the international scene at the very least, award-winning acting coach and author Ivana Chubbuck dished out a few substantial tips and tricks as to how the great “Hollywood dream” can be achieved by local and aspiring stars.
Chubbuck, who’s in the country to conduct a two-day acting workshop with select Star Magic artists, underscored that contrary to popular belief, talent alone is not enough in order for someone to make it big in the acting scene abroad. “You can’t just show up in Hollywood and expect everybody—since you’re a local celebrity—to like you. So if you come in and you audition and your work is great, you get the job. If your work is okay, you don’t,” she started during her press conference held at ABS-CBN hours after she arrived in the country on February 27.
More than just delivering a compelling performance for every take, Chubbuck also shared that one must be ready for real stiff competition in Hollywood. “In the international market, you really have to realize that it’s a big pond. You’ve got to rise to the occasion and there are sharks in that pond and there are piranhas in that pond and there’s all kinds of bacteria in that pond and you’ve got to have the right stuff to be able to tackle the sharks, the piranhas, and the bacteria and rise to the top,” she explained.
Regardless “which neck of the woods you come from,” it’s the actor’s thirst for knowledge together with hard work that gets him to his goal. “Talent is not enough. It may be enough in other places, but it’s not enough in the United States. It’s just not. Why? Because everybody comes there so they have choices, so many choices. You don’t need a strong accent, you don’t have to be pretty or handsome, but many people have done really, really well because they still learn,” Chubbuck clarified.
Having mentored celebrities like Halle Berry, Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey, Charlize Theron, and Beyonce among others, Chubbuck shared that being a great actor is ultimately becoming a well-rounded actor. “Like the equation I said before, someone who has a really strong work ethic. A hard worker. Someone who takes risks and makes bold choices and is not worried about whether or not people are going to like you,” she described.
She added that a great actor is someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to get things done greatly. “[Someone] who will never be afraid to look stupid and they are just willing to do anything to get what they want in terms of the objectives of a scene and not care what other people think. That for me is what defines greatness,” stated the The Power of the Actor: The Chubbuck Technique author.
Chubbuck was tapped to handle a master teaching class for actors like Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderson, Jake Cuenca, Akiko Solon, Dimples Romana, Koreen Medina, Arron Villaflor, Ynna Asistio, Arjo Atayde, Xian Lim, and Sam Milby.by Star Magic artist training head Rahyan Carlos, who himself was trained under her in the US. Other non-Star Magic artists like Carla Martinez, Issa Litton, Nico Policarpio, Christian Bables, Roj Gealon, Suzette Ranillo, and Liza Diño were also tapped to join the workshop.
The two-day workshop which will be held from March 1 to 2 at the Dolphy Theater of ABS-CBN will undergo a scene study and performance which have been assigned to them by Chubbuck. After each performance, the actors will be critiqued and given notes by Chubbuck.
