After getting positive reviews for his role as a killer for hire in his most recent film OTJ, Gerald Anderson said he believes he was able to prove his versatility as an actor. From starting out as a teen housemate on Pinoy Big Brother in 2006, the Fil-American heartthrob said it was a refreshing experience to play such a gritty character.
“As an actor, yun yung nag-push sa akin. Naka ilang movies na rin ako with Star Cinema and marami rami rin and mga love team movies which I’m really blessed to be part of pero ang nag-push talaga sa akin is this movie. Ito yung pinaka-iba sa lahat ng ginawa ko, yung research, yung focus na kailangan mo sa ganitong klaseng movie, halos lahat ng eksena ko was with Tito Joel (Torre) and when you’re working with an actor like that, you have to be at the top of your game. Kailangan you do your part. Napakagaling po ni Joel Torre. We had a beautiful and amazing set, yung mga staff and crew kaya naging kumportable ako at the same time kaya napakahirap,” he shared.
Joel Torre, who plays Gerald's mentor in the movie, was also one of the main reasons why Gerald said working on OTJ was an unforgettable experience. “I think the latest news was from Korea, nanalo pa si Tito Joel as Best Actor (at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival). Sobrang laking bagay yun para sa amin. We're all proud na maging ganun yung pag-recognize nila sa amin sa Korea,” he added.
The action-thriller also brought the 24-year-old actor to the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. “First time kong makasali sa isang film festival and the number one film festival in the world pa. Actually kinuwento nga sa amin ni direk nung shinu-shooting pa kami na baka makapasok siya sa Cannes, sa mga ganung festival pero siyempre ayaw mong mag-expect kasi gusto mo matapos yung film. Kaya nung nabalitaan ko na nakapasok kami, it was an amazing experience for me more than anything kasi as an actor, para makarating ako sa ganung klaseng lugar was amazing. I got to see Hollywood actors and mga actors na galing sa iba’t ibang bansa. Everybody there loved film and acting. So as an actor mas na-inspire, gusto ko na bumalik sa Pinas kasi I wanted to start taping again dahil parang ang dami kong na-absorb. Para siyang blessing sa akin,” he admitted.
As the star of the newest Primetime Bida series Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin, Gerald said he looks forward to doing more action sequences. “Well yung bagong soap ko is an action-drama so medyo konektado siya sa OTJ which is a genre na gusto ko gawin kasi iilan lang sa amin ang gumagawa ng ganung klaseng teleserye, mga ganung movies. It’s a very good opportunity to be able to do that. Sobrang iba siya sa lahat ng ginawa ko ever sa TV. It's a great project after Budoy kasi sobrang iba siya, sobrang layo ng storya, sobrang iba nung mga roles namin. Sobrang daming aabangan lalo na kay Miss Dawn (Zulueta),” he admitted.
Gerald is happy that his fans can finally see all the hard word they've put into his latest teleserye after almost a year of waiting. “Kung napanuod niyo na talagang makikita nyo na talagang pinaghirapan ng lahat yun, hindi lang kaming mga artista kundi pati yung director at staff at crew. Kaya yung story, yung mga writers talagang matagal yung pagbuo ng project kasi yung ganung klaseng project takes time eh. Ayaw rin namin madaliin kasi every project from Sir Deo (Edrinal)'s unit is made with good quality kaya gusto namin pag napanuod ng mga tao ay magustuhan niyo. Kasi ang bawat artista dun, the best ang binigay namin. Sina Miss Dawn, sina Miss Dina (Bonnevie), lahat sila wala akong masasabi sa galing nila,” he said.
Gerald said he does not want to comment anymore on the intrigues that initially came with the soap when it first included Maricel Soriano in the cast (who was later replaced by Dawn). “Ayoko ng bigyan ng sagot yun, hahaba lang (laughs),” he added.
The General Santos City native also refused to comment on rumors circulating that Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli are already dating. Gerald, who admitted he is very happy with current girlfriend Maja Salvador, said he has nothing negative to say about the rumored couple. “Huwag na. Ayoko na rin mag-comment. Ayoko magbigay ng comment kasi kung ano man sasabihin ko. This is in general, basta masaya ang lahat, everybody should be happy, yun na lang. Yun na lang. Sana maintindihan niyo,” he said.
